Paduṭṭhacittasutta
A Corrupted Mind
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

อิธาหํ ภิกฺขเว เอกจฺจํ ปุคฺคลํ ปทุฏฺฐจิตฺตํ เอวํ เจตสา เจโต
ปริจฺจ ปชานามิ✎ ร่าง
“Idhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ paduṭṭhacittaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi:
“Mendicants, when I’ve comprehended the mind of an individual whose mind is corrupted, I understand:
อิมมฺหิ จายํ สมเย ปุคฺคโล กาลํ กเรยฺย
ยถาภตํ นิกฺขิตฺโต เอวํ นิรเย✎ ร่าง
‘imamhi cāyaṁ samaye puggalo kālaṁ kareyya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye’.
‘If this individual were to die right now, they would be placed in hell as if delivered there.’
ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ kissa hetu?
Why is that?
จิตฺตญฺหิสฺส
ภิกฺขเว ปทุฏฺฐํ✎ ร่าง
Cittaṁ hissa, bhikkhave, paduṭṭhaṁ.
Because their mind is corrupted.
เจโตปโทสเหตุ โข ปน ภิกฺขเว เอวมิเธกจฺเจ
สตฺตา กายสฺส เภทา ปรมฺมรณา อปายํ ทุคฺคตึ วินิปาตํ นิรยํ
อุปฺปชฺชนฺตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Cetopadosahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjantī”ti.
Corruption of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
ปทุฏฺฐจิตฺตํ ญตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
“Paduṭṭhacittaṁ ñatvāna,
“Knowing an individual’s

corrupted mind,
เอตมตฺถํ พฺยากาสิ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthañca byākāsi,
the Buddha explained this matter
พุทฺโธ ภิกฺขูน สนฺติเก✎ ร่าง
buddho bhikkhūna santike.
in the mendicants’ presence.
อิมมฺหิ จายํ สมเย✎ ร่าง
Imamhi cāyaṁ samaye,
If that individual
กาลํ กยิราถ ปุคฺคโล✎ ร่าง
kālaṁ kayirātha puggalo;
were to die at this time,
นิรยํ อุปปชฺเชยฺย✎ ร่าง
Nirayaṁ upapajjeyya,
they’d be reborn in hell,
จิตฺตญฺหิสฺส ปทูสิตํ✎ ร่าง
cittaṁ hissa padūsitaṁ.
for their mind is corrupted.
ยถา หริตฺวา นิกฺขิเปยฺย✎ ร่าง
Yathā haritvā nikkhipeyya,
That sort is cast down as surely

เอวเมว ตถาวิโธ✎ ร่าง
evamevaṁ tathāvidho;
as if they’d been carried off and put there.
เจโตปโทสเหตู หิ✎ ร่าง
Cetopadosahetu hi,
For corruption of mind is the reason
สตฺตา คจฺฉนฺติ ทุคฺคตินฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sattā gacchanti duggatin”ti.
sentient beings go to a bad place.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
ทุติยวคฺโค ทุติโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dutiyo vaggo.
ตสฺสุทฺทานํ✎ ร่าง
Tassuddānaṁ
โมหโกธา ๑- อถ มกฺโข โม✎ ร่าง
Moho kodho atha makkho,
หกามา เสกฺขา ทุเว✎ ร่าง
Vijjā taṇhā sekhaduve ca;
เภทโมทา ปุคฺคโล จ✎ ร่าง
Bhedo sāmaggipuggalo,
วคฺคมาหุ ทุติยนฺติ วุจฺจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vaggamāhu dutiyanti vuccatīti.
