Pasannacittasutta
A Pure Mind
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

อิธาหํ
ภิกฺขเว เอกจฺจํ ปุคฺคลํ ปสนฺนจิตฺตํ เอวํ เจตสา เจโต ปริจฺจ
ปชานามิ✎ ร่าง
“Idhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ pasannacittaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi:
“Mendicants, when I’ve comprehended the mind of an individual whose mind is pure, I understand:

อิมมฺหิ จายํ สมเย ปุคฺคโล กาลํ กเรยฺย ยถาภตํ
นิกฺขิตฺโต เอวํ สคฺเค✎ ร่าง
‘imamhi cāyaṁ samaye puggalo kālaṁ kareyya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge’.
‘If this individual were to die right now, they would be placed in heaven as if delivered there.’
ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ kissa hetu?
Why is that?
จิตฺตญฺหิสฺส ภิกฺขเว ปสนฺนํ✎ ร่าง
Cittaṁ hissa, bhikkhave, pasannaṁ.
Because their mind is pure.
เจโตปสาทเหตุ โข ปน ภิกฺขเว เอวมิเธกจฺเจ สตฺตา กายสฺส
เภทา ปรมฺมรณา สุคตึ สคฺคํ โลกํ อุปปชฺชนฺตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Cetopasādahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjantī”ti.
Purity of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.”
เอตมตฺถํ
ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
ปสนฺนจิตฺตํ ญตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
“Pasannacittaṁ ñatvāna,
“Knowing an individual’s
เอกจฺจํ อิธ ปุคฺคลํ
เอตมตฺถํ พฺยากาสิ✎ ร่าง
ekaccaṁ idha puggalaṁ;
pure mind,
พุทฺโธ ภิกฺขูน สนฺติเก✎ ร่าง
buddho bhikkhūna santike.
in the mendicants’ presence.
อิมมฺหิ จายํ สมเย✎ ร่าง
Imamhi cāyaṁ samaye,
If that individual
กาลํ กยิราถ ปุคฺคโล✎ ร่าง
kālaṁ kayirātha puggalo;
were to die at this time,
สุคตึ อุปปชฺเชยฺย✎ ร่าง
Sugatiṁ upapajjeyya,
they’d be reborn in heaven,
จิตฺตญฺหิสฺส ปสาทิตํ✎ ร่าง
cittaṁ hissa pasāditaṁ.
for their mind is pure.
ยถา หริตฺวา นิกฺขิเปยฺย✎ ร่าง
Yathā haritvā nikkhipeyya,
That sort is raised up as surely
เอวเมว ตถาวิโธ✎ ร่าง
evamevaṁ tathāvidho;
as if they’d been carried and put there.
เจโตปสาทเหตู หิ✎ ร่าง
Cetopasādahetu hi,
For purity of mind is the reason
สตฺตา คจฺฉนฺติ สุคตินฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sattā gacchanti suggatin”ti.
sentient beings go to a good place.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
