Both Kinds of Benefit
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ภิกฺขเว ภาวิโต พหุลีกโต อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ✎ ร่าง
“Ekadhammo, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhigayha tiṭṭhati—
“This one thing, mendicants, when developed and cultivated, secures equal benefits for both

diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ samparāyikañca.
this life and lives to come.
กตโม เอกธมฺโม✎ ร่าง
Katamo ekadhammo?
What one thing?
อปฺปมาโท กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Appamādo kusalesu dhammesu.
Diligence in skillful qualities.
อยํ โข ภิกฺขเว เอกธมฺโม ภาวิโต
พหุลีกโต อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ✎ ร่าง
Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ekadhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhigayha tiṭṭhati—
This is the one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures equal benefits for both
ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกญฺเจว อตฺถํ
สมฺปรายิกญฺจาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ samparāyikañcā”ti.
this life and lives to come.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
อปฺปมาทํ ปสํสนฺติ✎ ร่าง
“Appamādaṁ pasaṁsanti,
“The astute praise diligence

ปุญฺญกิริยาสุ ปณฺฑิตา✎ ร่าง
puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā;
in making merit.
อปฺปมตฺโต อุโภ อตฺเถ✎ ร่าง
Appamatto ubho atthe,
Being diligent, an astute person
อธิคฺคณฺหาติ ปณฺฑิโต✎ ร่าง
adhigaṇhāti paṇḍito.
secures both benefits:
ทิฏฺเฐ ธมฺเม จ โย อตฺโถ✎ ร่าง
Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho,
the benefit in this life,

โย จตฺโถ สมฺปรายิโก✎ ร่าง
yo cattho samparāyiko;
and in lives to come.
อตฺถาภิสมยา ธีโร✎ ร่าง
Atthābhisamayā dhīro,
Attentive, comprehending the meaning,
ปณฺฑิโตติ ปวุจฺจตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.
they are said to be astute.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตฺตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
