Aṭṭhipuñjasutta
A Heap of Bones
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
เอกปุคฺคลสฺส
ภิกฺขเว กปฺปํ สนฺธาวโต สํสรโต สิยา เอวํ มหา อฏฺฐิกงฺกโล
อฏฺฐิปุญฺโช อฏฺฐิราสิ ยถายํ เวปุลฺลปพฺพโต สเจ สํหารโก
อสฺส สมฺภตญฺจ น วินสฺเสยฺยาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Ekapuggalassa, bhikkhave, kappaṁ sandhāvato saṁsarato siyā evaṁ mahā aṭṭhikaṅkalo aṭṭhipuñjo aṭṭhirāsi yathāyaṁ vepullo pabbato, sace saṁhārako assa, sambhatañca na vinasseyyā”ti.
“Mendicants, one person roaming and transmigrating for an eon would amass a heap of bones the size of this Mount Vepulla, if they were gathered together and not lost.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
เอกสฺเสเกน กปฺเปน✎ ร่าง
“Ekassekena kappena,
“If the bones of a single individual
ปุคฺคลสฺสฏฺฐิสญฺจโย✎ ร่าง
puggalassaṭṭhisañcayo;
for a single eon were gathered up,
สิยา ปพฺพตสโม ราสิ✎ ร่าง
Siyā pabbatasamo rāsi,
they’d make a pile the size of a mountain:
อิติ วุตฺตํ มเหสินา✎ ร่าง
iti vuttaṁ mahesinā.
so said the great seer.
โส โข ปนายํ อกฺขาโต✎ ร่าง
So kho panāyaṁ akkhāto,
And this is declared to be
เวปุลฺโล ปพฺพโต มหา✎ ร่าง
vepullo pabbato mahā;
as huge as Mount Vepulla,
อุตฺตโร คิชฺฌกูฏสฺส✎ ร่าง
Uttaro gijjhakūṭassa,
higher than the Vulture’s Peak
มคธานํ คิริพฺพเช✎ ร่าง
magadhānaṁ giribbaje.
near the Mountainfold of the Magadhans.
ยโต จ อริยสจฺจานิ✎ ร่าง
Yato ca ariyasaccāni,
But then, with right understanding,

สมฺมปฺปญฺญาย ปสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
sammappaññāya passati;
one sees the noble truths—
ทุกฺขํ ทุกฺขสมุปฺปาทํ✎ ร่าง
Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,
suffering, suffering’s origin,
ทุกฺขสฺส จ อติกฺกมํ✎ ร่าง
dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;
suffering’s transcendence,
อริยญฺจฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ✎ ร่าง
Ariyañcaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,
and the noble eightfold path
ทุกฺขูปสมคามินํ✎ ร่าง
dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
that leads to the stilling of suffering.
ส สตฺตกฺขตฺตุํ ปรมํ✎ ร่าง
Sa sattakkhattuṁ paramaṁ,
After roaming on seven times at most,
สนฺธาวิตฺวาน ปุคฺคโล✎ ร่าง
sandhāvitvāna puggalo;
that individual
ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตกโร โหติ✎ ร่าง
Dukkhassantakaro hoti,
makes an end of suffering,
สพฺพสํโยชนกฺขยาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sabbasaṁyojanakkhayā”ti.
with the ending of all fetters.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
