วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ตถาคตํ
ภิกฺขเว อรหนฺตํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธํ เทฺว วิตกฺกา พหุลํ สมุทาจรนฺติ✎ ร่าง
“Tathāgataṁ, bhikkhave, arahantaṁ sammāsambuddhaṁ dve vitakkā bahulaṁ samudācaranti—
“Two thoughts, mendicants, often occur to the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha:
เขโม จ วิตกฺโก วิเวโก ๒- จ ฯ✎ ร่าง
khemo ca vitakko, paviveko ca.
the thought of sanctuary, and that of seclusion.
อพฺยาปชฺฌาราโม ภิกฺขเว
ตถาคโต อพฺยาปชฺฌรโต✎ ร่าง
Abyāpajjhārāmo, bhikkhave, tathāgato abyāpajjharato.
The Realized One loves kindness and delights in it,
ตเมนํ ภิกฺขเว ตถาคตํ อพฺยาปชฺฌารามํ
อพฺยาปชฺฌรตํ เอเสว วิตกฺโก พหุลํ สมุทาจรติ✎ ร่าง
Tamenaṁ, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ abyāpajjhārāmaṁ abyāpajjharataṁ eseva vitakko bahulaṁ samudācarati:
so this thought often occurs to him:
อิมายาหํ อิริยาย
น กิญฺจิ พฺยาพาเธมิ ตสํ วา ถาวรํ วาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘imāyāhaṁ iriyāya na kañci byābādhemi tasaṁ vā thāvaraṁ vā’ti.
‘Through this behavior, I shall not hurt any creature firm or frail.’
ปวิเวการาโม ภิกฺขเว ตถาคโต ปวิเวกรโต✎ ร่าง
Pavivekārāmo, bhikkhave, tathāgato pavivekarato.
The Realized One loves seclusion and delights in it,
ตเมนํ
ภิกฺขเว ตถาคตํ ปวิเวการามํ ปวิเวกรตํ เอเสว วิตกฺโก พหุลํ
สมุทาจรติ✎ ร่าง
Tamenaṁ, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ pavivekārāmaṁ pavivekarataṁ eseva vitakko bahulaṁ samudācarati:
so this thought often occurs to him:
ยํ อกุสลํ ตํ ปหีนนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘yaṁ akusalaṁ taṁ pahīnan’ti.
‘What is unskillful has been given up.’
ตสฺมา ติห ภิกฺขเว ตุเมฺหปิ

อพฺยาปชฺฌารามา วิหรถ อพฺยาปชฺฌรตา✎ ร่าง
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, tumhepi abyāpajjhārāmā viharatha abyāpajjharatā.
So, mendicants, you too should love kindness and delight in it,

then this thought will often occur to you:
อิมาย มยํ อิริยาย น กิญฺจิ
พฺยาพาเธม ตสํ วา ถาวรํ วาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘imāya mayaṁ iriyāya na kañci byābādhema tasaṁ vā thāvaraṁ vā’ti.
‘Through this behavior, I shall not hurt any creature firm or frail.’
ปวิเวการามา ภิกฺขเว วิหรถ ปวิเวกรตา✎ ร่าง
Pavivekārāmā, bhikkhave, viharatha pavivekaratā.
You too should love seclusion and delight in it,
เตสํ
โว ภิกฺขเว ตุมฺหากํ ปวิเวการามานํ วิหรตํ ปวิเวกรตานํ
เอเสว วิตกฺโก พหุลํ สมุทาจริสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
Tesaṁ vo, bhikkhave, tumhākaṁ pavivekārāmānaṁ viharataṁ pavivekaratānaṁ eseva vitakko bahulaṁ samudācarissati:
then this thought will often occur to you:
กึ อกุสลํ กึ อปฺปหีนํ
กึ ปชหามาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘kiṁ akusalaṁ, kiṁ appahīnaṁ, kiṁ pajahāmā’”ti.
‘What is unskillful? What is not given up? What should I give up?’”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
ตถาคตํ พุทฺธํ อสยฺหสาหินํ✎ ร่าง
“Tathāgataṁ buddhamasayhasāhinaṁ,
“Two thoughts occur to him,
เทฺว วิตกฺกา สมุทาจรนฺติ นํ✎ ร่าง
Duve vitakkā samudācaranti naṁ;
the Realized One, the bearer of the unbearable:
เขโม วิตกฺโก ปฐโม อุทีริโต✎ ร่าง
Khemo vitakko paṭhamo udīrito,
first mentioned was thought of sanctuary,
ตโต วิเวโก ทุติโย ปกาสิโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tato viveko dutiyo pakāsito.
then the second made clear was seclusion.
ตโมนุทํ ปารคตํ มเหสึ✎ ร่าง
Tamonudaṁ pāragataṁ mahesiṁ,
Dispeller of darkness, the great seer has crossed over:

ตํ ปตฺติปตฺตํ วสิมํ อนาสวํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ pattipattaṁ vasimaṁ anāsavaṁ;
the attained, the master, the undefiled.
วิสนฺตรํ ตณฺหกฺขเย วิมุตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Visantaraṁ taṇhakkhaye vimuttaṁ,
In the midst of it all, he is freed in the ending of craving;
ตํ เว มุนึ อนฺติมเทหธารึ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ ve muniṁ antimadehadhāriṁ;
that sage bears his final body.
มารชหํ พฺรูมิ ชราย ปารคุํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Mārañjahaṁ brūmi jarāya pāraguṁ.
He has disposed of Māra, I declare, and gone beyond old age.
สเล ยถา ปพฺพตมุทฺธนิฏฺฐิโต✎ ร่าง
Sele yathā pabbatamuddhaniṭṭhito,
Standing high on a rocky mountain,

ยถาปิ ปสฺเส ชนตํ สมนฺตโต✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi passe janataṁ samantato;
you can see the people all around.
ตถูปมํ ธมฺมมยํ สุเมโธ✎ ร่าง
Tathūpamaṁ dhammamayaṁ sumedho,
In just the same way, the all-seer, so intelligent,
ปาสาทมารุยห สมนฺตจกฺขุ✎ ร่าง
Pāsādamāruyha samantacakkhu;
having ascended the Temple of Truth,
โสกาวติณฺณํ ชนตมฺมเปตโสโก✎ ร่าง
Sokāvatiṇṇaṁ janatamapetasoko,
rid of sorrow, looks upon the people
อเวกฺขติ ชาติชราภิภูตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Avekkhati jātijarābhibhūtan”ti.
swamped with sorrow, overcome by rebirth and old age.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
