วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ตถาคตสฺส ภิกฺขเว อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส เทฺว ธมฺมเทสนา
ปริยาเยน ภวนฺติ✎ ร่าง
“Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavanti.
“Mendicants, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has two approaches to teaching Dhamma.
กตมา เทฺว✎ ร่าง
Katamā dve?
What two?
ปาปํ ปาปกโต ปสฺสถาติ✎ ร่าง
‘Pāpaṁ pāpakato passathā’ti—
‘See evil as evil’—
อยํ
ปฐมา ธมฺมเทสนา✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ paṭhamā dhammadesanā;
this is the first approach to teaching Dhamma.
ปาปํ ปาปกโต ทิสฺวา ตตฺถ นิพฺพินฺทถ
วิรชฺชถ วิมุจฺจถาติ✎ ร่าง
‘pāpaṁ pāpakato disvā tattha nibbindatha virajjatha vimuccathā’ti—
‘Having seen evil as evil, be disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed from it’—
อยมฺปิ ๒- ทุติยา ธมฺมเทสนา✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ dutiyā dhammadesanā.
this is the second approach to teaching Dhamma.
ตถาคตสฺส
ภิกฺขเว อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส อิมา เทฺว ธมฺมเทสนา ปริยาเยน
ภวนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa imā dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavantī”ti.
The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has these two approaches to teaching Dhamma.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
ตถาคตสฺส พุทฺธสฺส✎ ร่าง
“Tathāgatassa buddhassa,
“See the two approaches for
สพฺพภูตานุกมฺปิโน✎ ร่าง
sabbabhūtānukampino;
explaining the Dhamma
ปริยายวจนํ ปสฺส✎ ร่าง
Pariyāyavacanaṁ passa,
used by the Realized One, the Buddha,
เทฺว จ ธมฺมา ปกาสิตา✎ ร่าง
dve ca dhammā pakāsitā.
compassionate for all beings:
ปาปกํ ปสฺสถ เฉกา✎ ร่าง
Pāpakaṁ passatha cetaṁ,
see that that is evil,

tattha cāpi virajjatha;
and be dispassionate towards it.
ตโต วิรตฺตจิตฺตาเส✎ ร่าง
Tato virattacittāse,
Then, with a mind free of desire,
ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตํ กริสฺสถาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
dukkhassantaṁ karissathā”ti.
you’ll make an end of suffering.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
