Paññāparihīnasutta
Bereft of Wisdom
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

เต
ภิกฺขเว สตฺตา สุปริหีนา เย อริยาย ปญฺญาย ปริหีนา✎ ร่าง
“Te, bhikkhave, sattā suparihīnā ye ariyāya paññāya parihīnā.
“Those sentient beings are truly bereft, mendicants, who are bereft of noble wisdom.
เต
ทิฏฺเฐ เจว ๓- ธมฺเม ทุกฺขํ วิหรนฺติ สวิฆาตํ สอุปายาสํ สปริฬาหํ✎ ร่าง
Te diṭṭheva dhamme dukkhaṁ viharanti savighātaṁ saupāyāsaṁ sapariḷāhaṁ;
They live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—
กายสฺส เภทา ปรมฺมรณา ทุคฺคติ ปาฏิกงฺขา ฯ✎ ร่าง
kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā duggati pāṭikaṅkhā.
and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a bad rebirth.
เต ภิกฺขเว สตฺตา
อปริหีนา เย อริยาย ปญฺญาย อปริหีนา✎ ร่าง
Te, bhikkhave, sattā aparihīnā ye ariyāya paññāya aparihīnā.
Those sentient beings are not bereft who are not bereft of noble wisdom.
เต ทิฏฺเฐ เจว
ธมฺเม สุขํ วิหรนฺติ อวิฆาตํ อนุปายาสํ อปริฬาหํ✎ ร่าง
Te diṭṭheva dhamme sukhaṁ viharanti avighātaṁ anupāyāsaṁ apariḷāhaṁ;
In this very life they’re happy—free of distress, anguish, and fever—
กายสฺส เภทา
ปรมฺมรณา สุคติ ปาฏิกงฺขาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugati pāṭikaṅkhā”ti.
and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a good rebirth.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
ปญฺญาย ปริหาเนน✎ ร่าง
“Paññāya parihānena,
“See the world with its gods,
ปสฺส โลกํ สเทวกํ✎ ร่าง
passa lokaṁ sadevakaṁ;
bereft of wisdom,
นิวิฏฺฐํ นามรูปสฺมึ✎ ร่าง
Niviṭṭhaṁ nāmarūpasmiṁ,
habituated to name and form,
อิทํ สจฺจนฺติ มญฺญติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
idaṁ saccanti maññati.
imagining this is truth.
ปญฺญา หิ เสฏฺฐา โลกสฺมึ✎ ร่าง
Paññā hi seṭṭhā lokasmiṁ,
Wisdom is best in the world,

yāyaṁ nibbedhagāminī;
as it leads to penetration,
า ๑- จ สมฺมา ปชานาติ✎ ร่าง
Yāya sammā pajānāti,
through which one rightly understands
ชาติภวปริกฺขยํ✎ ร่าง
jātibhavaparikkhayaṁ.
the ending of rebirth and continued existence.
เตสํ เทวา มนุสฺสา จ✎ ร่าง
Tesaṁ devā manussā ca,
Gods and humans envy them,

สมฺพุทฺธานํ สตีมตํ✎ ร่าง
sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ;
the Buddhas, ever mindful,
ปิหยนฺติ หาสปญฺญานํ✎ ร่าง
Pihayanti hāsapaññānaṁ,
of laughing wisdom,
สรีรนฺติมธารินนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sarīrantimadhārinan”ti.
bearing their final body.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
