Sukkadhammasutta
Bright Things
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
เทฺวเม
ภิกฺขเว สุกฺกา ธมฺมา โลกํ ปาเลนฺติ✎ ร่าง
“Dveme, bhikkhave, sukkā dhammā lokaṁ pālenti.
“These two bright things, mendicants, protect the world.

Katame dve?
What two?
หิริ ๓-
จ โอตฺตปฺปํ จ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Hirī ca, ottappañca.
Conscience and prudence.
อิเม เจ ภิกฺขเว เทฺว สุกฺกา ธมฺมา โลกํ
น ปาเลยฺยุํ นยิธ ปญฺญาเยถ มาตาติ วา มาตุจฺฉาติ วา
มาตุลานีติ วา อาจริยภิริยาติ วา ครูนํ ทาราติ วา✎ ร่าง
Ime ce, bhikkhave, dve sukkā dhammā lokaṁ na pāleyyuṁ, nayidha paññāyetha mātāti vā mātucchāti vā mātulānīti vā ācariyabhariyāti vā garūnaṁ dārāti vā.
If these two bright things did not protect the world, there would be no recognition of the status of mother, aunts, or wives and partners of tutors and respected people.
สมฺเภทํ
โลโก อคมิสฺส ยถา อเชฬกา กุกฺกุฏสูกรา โสณสิงฺคาลา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sambhedaṁ loko agamissa yathā ajeḷakā kukkuṭasūkarā soṇasiṅgālā.
The world would become dissolute, like goats and sheep, chickens and pigs, and hounds and jackals.
ยสฺมา จ โข ภิกฺขเว อิเม เทฺว สุกฺกา ธมฺมา โลกํ
ปาเลนฺติ ตสฺมา ปญฺญาเยถ ๔- มาตาติ วา มาตุจฺฉาติ วา
มาตุลานีติ วา อาจริยภิริยาติ วา ครูนํ ทาราติ วาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, ime dve sukkā dhammā lokaṁ pālenti tasmā paññāyati mātāti vā mātucchāti vā mātulānīti vā ācariyabhariyāti vā garūnaṁ dārāti vā”ti.
But because the two bright things protect the world, there is recognition of the status of mother, aunts, and wives and partners of tutors and respected people.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
เยสํ เจ หิริโอตฺตปฺปํ✎ ร่าง
“Yesañce hiriottappaṁ,
“Those in whom conscience and prudence
สพฺพทา จ น วิชฺชติ✎ ร่าง
sabbadā ca na vijjati;
are never found at all,
โวกฺกนฺตา สุกฺกมูลา เต✎ ร่าง
Vokkantā sukkamūlā te,
have lost their bright roots,
ชาติมรณคามิโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
jātimaraṇagāmino.
and fare on in birth and death.
เยสญฺจ หิริโอตฺตปฺปํ✎ ร่าง
Yesañca hiriottappaṁ,
Those in whom conscience and prudence

สทา สมฺมา อุปฏฺฐิตา✎ ร่าง
sadā sammā upaṭṭhitā;
are always rightly established,
วิรูฬฺหพฺรหฺมจริยา เต✎ ร่าง
Virūḷhabrahmacariyā te,
thrive in the spiritual life;
สนฺโต ขีณปุนพฺภวาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
santo khīṇapunabbhavā”ti.
being at peace, they will not be reborn again.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
