Elements of Extinguishment
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

เทฺวมา
ภิกฺขเว นิพฺพานธาตุโย✎ ร่าง
“Dvemā, bhikkhave, nibbānadhātuyo.
“There are, mendicants, these two elements of extinguishment.
กตมา เทฺว✎ ร่าง
Katamā dve?
What two?
สอุปาทิเสสา จ นิพฺพานธาตุ
อนุปาทิเสสา จ นิพฺพานธาตุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Saupādisesā ca nibbānadhātu, anupādisesā ca nibbānadhātu.
The element of extinguishment with residue, and the element of extinguishment with no residue.
กตมา จ ภิกฺขเว สอุปาทิเสสา นิพฺพานธาตุ✎ ร่าง
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, saupādisesā nibbānadhātu?
And what is the element of extinguishment with residue?

อิธ
ภิกฺขเว ภิกฺขุ อรหํ โหติ ขีณาสโว วุสิตวา กตกรณีโย
โอหิตภาโร อนุปฺปตฺตสทตฺโถ ปริกฺขีณภวสํโยชโน
สมฺมทญฺญา วิมุตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahaṁ hoti khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojano sammadaññāvimutto.
It’s when a mendicant is a perfected one, with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their heart’s goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment.
ตสฺส ติฏฺฐนฺเตว ปญฺจินฺทฺริยานิ
เยสํ อวิฆาตตฺตา ๓- มนาปามนาปํ ปจฺจนุโภติ สุขทุกฺขํ

ปฏิสํเวทยติ✎ ร่าง
Tassa tiṭṭhanteva pañcindriyāni yesaṁ avighātattā manāpāmanāpaṁ paccanubhoti, sukhadukkhaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.
Their five sense faculties still remain. So long as their senses have not gone they continue to experience the agreeable and disagreeable, to feel pleasure and pain.
ตสฺส โย ราคกฺขโย โทสกฺขโย โมหกฺขโย✎ ร่าง
Tassa yo rāgakkhayo, dosakkhayo, mohakkhayo—
The ending of greed, hate, and delusion in them

วุจฺจติ ภิกฺขเว สอุปาทิเสสา นิพฺพานธาตุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saupādisesā nibbānadhātu.
is called the element of extinguishment with residue.
กตมา จ ภิกฺขเว อนุปาทิเสสา นิพฺพานธาตุ✎ ร่าง
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, anupādisesā nibbānadhātu?
And what is the element of extinguishment with no residue?
อิธ
ภิกฺขเว ภิกฺขุ อรหํ โหติ ขีณาสโว วุสิตวา กตกรณีโย โอหิตภาโร
อนุปฺปตฺตสทตฺโถ ปริกฺขีณภวสํโยชโน สมฺมทญฺญา วิมุตฺโต✎ ร่าง

Tassa idheva, bhikkhave, sabbavedayitāni anabhinanditāni sīti bhavissanti.
For them, everything that’s felt, being no longer relished, will become cool right here.
อยํ วุจฺจติ ภิกฺขเว อนุปาทิเสสา นิพฺพานธาตุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, anupādisesā nibbānadhātu.
This is called the element of extinguishment with no residue.
อิมา โข ภิกฺขเว
เทฺว นิพฺพานธาตุโยติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve nibbānadhātuyo”ti.
These are the two elements of extinguishment.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
เทฺว อิมา จกฺขุมตา ปกาสิตา✎ ร่าง
“Duve imā cakkhumatā pakāsitā,
“These two elements of extinguishment have been explained

นิพฺพานธาตู อนิสฺสิเตน ตาทินา✎ ร่าง
Nibbānadhātū anissitena tādinā;
by the Clear-eyed One, the unattached, the unaffected.
เอกา หิ ธาตุ อิธ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกา✎ ร่าง
Ekā hi dhātu idha diṭṭhadhammikā,
One element pertains to this life—
สอุปาทิเสสา ภวเนตฺติสงฺขยา✎ ร่าง
Saupādisesā bhavanettisaṅkhayā;
that with residue though the leash to existence has ended;
อนุปาทิเสสา ปน สมฺปรายิกา✎ ร่าง
Anupādisesā pana samparāyikā,
and that with no residue, which pertains to what follows this life,
ยมฺหิ นิรุชฺฌนฺติ ภวานิ สพฺพโส ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yamhi nirujjhanti bhavāni sabbaso.
where all states of existence cease.
เย เอตทญฺญาย ปทํ อสงฺขตํ✎ ร่าง
Ye etadaññāya padaṁ asaṅkhataṁ,
Those who have fully understood the unconditioned state—
วิมุตฺตจิตฺตา ภวเนตฺติสงฺขยา✎ ร่าง
Vimuttacittā bhavanettisaṅkhayā;
their minds freed, the leash to existence ended—
เต ธมฺมสาราธิคมกฺขเย ๒- รตา✎ ร่าง
Te dhammasārādhigamā khaye ratā,
attained to the heart of the Dhamma, they delight in ending,
ปหํสุ เต สพฺพภวานิ ตาทิโนติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pahaṁsu te sabbabhavāni tādino”ti.
the unaffected ones have given up all states of existence.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
