The Best Kinds of Confidence
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควตา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

“Mendicants, these three kinds of confidence are the best.

What three?
ยาวตา ภิกฺขเว สตฺตา
อปาทา วา ทฺวิปาทา วา จตุปฺปทา วา พหุปฺปทา วา รูปิโน
วา อรูปิโน วา สญฺญิโน วา อสญฺญิโน วา เนวสญฺญีนาสญฺญิโน
วา ตถาคโต เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ✎ ร่าง
Yāvatā, bhikkhave, sattā apadā vā dvipadā vā catuppadā vā bahuppadā vā rūpino vā arūpino vā saññino vā asaññino vā nevasaññināsaññino vā, tathāgato tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati arahaṁ sammāsambuddho.
Mendicants, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, is said to be the best of all sentient beings—be they footless, with two feet, four feet, or many feet; with form or formless; with perception or without perception or with neither perception nor non-perception.

ภิกฺขเว พุทฺเธ ปสนฺนา อคฺเค เต ปสนฺนา✎ ร่าง
Ye, bhikkhave, buddhe pasannā, agge te pasannā.
Those who have confidence in the Buddha have confidence in the best.
อคฺเค โข ปน
ปสนฺนานํ อคฺโค วิปาโก โหติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Agge kho pana pasannānaṁ aggo vipāko hoti.
Having confidence in the best, the result is the best.
ยาวตา ภิกฺขเว ธมฺมา สงฺขตา วา อสงฺขตา วา
วิราโค เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ ยทิทํ มทนิมฺมทโน ปิปาสวินโย
อาลยสมุคฺฆาโต วฏฺฏุปจฺเฉโท ตณฺหกฺขโย วิราโค นิโรโธ
นิพฺพานํ✎ ร่าง
Yāvatā, bhikkhave, dhammā saṅkhatā vā asaṅkhatā vā, virāgo tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ madanimmadano pipāsavinayo ālayasamugghāto vaṭṭupacchedo taṇhakkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbānaṁ.
Fading away is said to be the best of all things whether conditioned or unconditioned. That is, the quelling of vanity, the removing of thirst, the abolishing of clinging, the breaking of the round, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation, extinguishment.
เย ภิกฺขเว วิราเค ธมฺเม ปสนฺนา อคฺเค เต ปสนฺนา
อคฺเค โข ปน ปสนฺนานํ อคฺโค วิปาโก โหติ ฯ

มคฺโค เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ เสยฺยถีทํ สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิ สมฺมาสงฺกปฺโป
สมฺมาวาจา สมฺมากมฺมนฺโต สมฺมาอาชีโว สมฺมาวายาโม
สมฺมาสติ สมฺมาสมาธิ เย ภิกฺขเว อริยมคฺคธมฺเม ปสนฺนา
อคฺเค เต ปสนฺนา✎ ร่าง
Ye, bhikkhave, virāge dhamme pasannā, agge te pasannā.
Those who have confidence in the teaching of fading away have confidence in the best.
อคฺเค โข ปน ปสนฺนานํ อคฺโค วิปาโก โหติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Agge kho pana pasannānaṁ aggo vipāko hoti.
Having confidence in the best, the result is the best.
ยาวตา ภิกฺขเว สงฺฆา วา คณา วา ตถาคต-
สาวกสงฺโฆ เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ ยทิทํ จตฺตาริ ปุริสยุคานิ อฏฺฐ

ปุริสปุคฺคลา ๑- เ✎ ร่าง
Yāvatā, bhikkhave, saṅghā vā gaṇā vā, tathāgatasāvakasaṅgho tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa.
The Saṅgha of the Realized One’s disciples is said to be the best of all communities and groups. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individual persons. This is the Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with cupped palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.

Those who have confidence in the Saṅgha have confidence in the best.

Agge kho pana pasannānaṁ aggo vipāko hoti.
Having confidence in the best, the result is the best.
อิเม โข ภิกฺขเว
ตโย อคฺคปฺปสาทาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo aggappasādā”ti.
These are the three best kinds of confidence.”
เอตมตฺถํ ภควา อโวจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
ตตฺเถตํ อิติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
อคฺคโต เว ปสนฺนานํ✎ ร่าง
“Aggato ve pasannānaṁ,
“For those who, knowing the best teaching,
อคฺคํ ธมฺมํ วิชานตํ✎ ร่าง
aggaṁ dhammaṁ vijānataṁ;
base their confidence on the best—
อคฺเค พุทฺเธ ปสนฺนานํ✎ ร่าง
Agge buddhe pasannānaṁ,
confident in the best Awakened One,
ทกฺขิเณยฺเย อนุตฺตเร✎ ร่าง
dakkhiṇeyye anuttare.
supremely worthy of a religious donation;
อคฺเค ธมฺเม ปสนฺนานํ✎ ร่าง
Agge dhamme pasannānaṁ,
confident in the best teaching,

virāgūpasame sukhe;
the bliss of fading and stilling;

Agge saṅghe pasannānaṁ,
confident in the best Saṅgha,
ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺเต อนุตฺตเร✎ ร่าง
puññakkhette anuttare.
the supreme field of merit—
อคฺคสฺมึ ทานํ ททตํ✎ ร่าง
Aggasmiṁ dānaṁ dadataṁ,
giving gifts to the best,

aggaṁ puññaṁ pavaḍḍhati;
the best of merit grows:
อคฺคํ อายุ จ วณฺโณ จ✎ ร่าง
Aggaṁ āyu ca vaṇṇo ca,
the best lifespan, beauty,
ยโส กิตฺติ สุขํ พลํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yaso kitti sukhaṁ balaṁ.
fame, reputation, happiness, and strength.
อคฺคสฺส ทาตา เมธาวี✎ ร่าง
Aggassa dātā medhāvī,
An intelligent person gives to the best,
อคฺคธมฺมสมาหิโต✎ ร่าง
aggadhammasamāhito;
settled on the best teaching.
เทวภูโต มนุสฺโส วา✎ ร่าง
Devabhūto manusso vā,
When they become a god or human,
อคฺคปฺปตฺโต ปโมทตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
aggappatto pamodatī”ti.
they rejoice at reaching the best.”
อยมฺปิ อตฺโถ วุตฺโต ภควตา อิติ เม สุตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
