ปณฺฑุปลาโสวทานิสิ✎ ร่าง
Paṇḍupalāsova dānisi,
Today you’re like a withered leaf,
ยมปุริสาปิ จ ตํ ๑- อุปฏฺฐิตา✎ ร่าง
Yamapurisāpi ca te upaṭṭhitā;
Yama’s men await you.
อุยฺโยคมุเข จ ติฏฺฐสิ✎ ร่าง
Uyyogamukhe ca tiṭṭhasi,
You stand at the departure gates,
ปาเถยฺยมฺปิ จ เต น วิชฺชติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati.
yet you have no supplies for the road.
โส กโรหิ ทีปมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
So karohi dīpamattano,
Make an island of yourself!
ขิปฺปํ วายม ปณฺฑิโต ภว✎ ร่าง
Khippaṁ vāyama paṇḍito bhava;
Swiftly strive, learn to be wise!
นิทฺธนฺตมโล อนงฺคโณ✎ ร่าง
Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo,
Purged of stains, flawless,
ทิพฺพํ อริยภูมิเมหิสิ ๒- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dibbaṁ ariyabhūmiṁ upehisi.
you’ll go to the heavenly realm of the noble ones.
อุปนีตวโย ว ทานิสิ✎ ร่าง
Upanītavayo ca dānisi,
You’ve journeyed the stages of life,

สมฺปยาโตสิ ยมสฺส สนฺติกํ✎ ร่าง
Sampayātosi yamassa santikaṁ;
and now you set out to meet Yama.
วาโสปิ จ เต นตฺถิ อนฺตรา✎ ร่าง
Vāso te natthi antarā,
Along the way there’s nowhere to stay,
ปาเถยฺยมฺปิ จ เต น วิชฺชติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati.
yet you have no supplies for the road.
โส กโรหิ ทีปมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
So karohi dīpamattano,
Make an island of yourself!
ขิปฺปํ วายม ปณฺฑิโต ภว✎ ร่าง
Khippaṁ vāyama paṇḍito bhava;
Swiftly strive, learn to be wise!
นิทฺธนฺตมโล อนงฺคโณ✎ ร่าง
Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo,
Purged of stains, flawless,
น ปุน ชาติชรํ อุเปหิสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Na punaṁ jātijaraṁ upehisi.
you’ll not come again to rebirth and old age.
อนุปุพฺเพน เมธาวี✎ ร่าง
Anupubbena medhāvī,
A smart person would purge
โถกํ โถกํ ขเณ ขเณ✎ ร่าง
thokaṁ thokaṁ khaṇe khaṇe;
their own stains gradually,
กมฺมาโร รชตสฺเสว✎ ร่าง
Kammāro rajatasseva,
bit by bit, moment by moment,
นิทฺธเม มลมตฺตโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
niddhame malamattano.
like a smith smelting silver.
อยสา ว มลํ สมุฏฺฐิตํ✎ ร่าง
Ayasāva malaṁ samuṭṭhitaṁ,
It is the rust born on the iron
ตทุฏฺฐาย ตเมว ขาทติ✎ ร่าง
Tatuṭṭhāya tameva khādati;
that eats away the place it arose.
เอวํ อติโธนจารินํ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ atidhonacārinaṁ,
And so it is their own deeds
สานิ กมฺมานิ นยนฺติ ทุคฺคตึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sāni kammāni nayanti duggatiṁ.
that lead the overly-ascetic to a bad place.
อสชฺฌายมลา มนฺตา✎ ร่าง
Asajjhāyamalā mantā,
Not rehearsing is the stain of hymns.

อนุฏฺฐานมลา ฆรา✎ ร่าง
anuṭṭhānamalā gharā;
The stain of houses is neglect.
มลํ วณฺณสฺส โกสชฺชํ✎ ร่าง
Malaṁ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṁ,
Laziness is the stain of beauty.
ปมาโท รกฺขโต มลํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
pamādo rakkhato malaṁ.
A guard’s stain is negligence.

มลิตฺถิยา ทุจฺจริตํ✎ ร่าง
Malitthiyā duccaritaṁ,
Misconduct is a woman’s stain.
มจฺเฉรํ ททโต มลํ✎ ร่าง
maccheraṁ dadato malaṁ;
A giver’s stain is stinginess.
มลา เว ปาปกา ธมฺมา✎ ร่าง
Malā ve pāpakā dhammā,
Bad qualities are a stain
อสฺมึ โลเก ปรมฺหิ จ✎ ร่าง
asmiṁ loke paramhi ca.
in this world and the next.
ตโต มลา มลตรํ✎ ร่าง
Tato malā malataraṁ,
But a worse stain than these

อวิชฺชา ปรมํ มลํ✎ ร่าง
avijjā paramaṁ malaṁ;
is ignorance, the worst stain of all.
เอตํ มลํ ปหตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Etaṁ malaṁ pahantvāna,
Having given up that stain,
นิมฺมลา โหถ ภิกฺขโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
nimmalā hotha bhikkhavo.
be without stains, mendicants!
สุชีวํ อหิริเกน✎ ร่าง
Sujīvaṁ ahirikena,
Life is easy for the shameless.

กากสูเรน ธํสินา✎ ร่าง
kākasūrena dhaṁsinā;
With all the rude courage of a crow,
ปกฺขนฺทินา ปคพฺเภน✎ ร่าง
Pakkhandinā pagabbhena,
they live pushy,
สงฺกิลิฏฺเฐน ชีวิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
saṅkiliṭṭhena jīvitaṁ.
rude, and corrupt.
หิรีมตา จ ทุชฺชีวํ✎ ร่าง
Hirīmatā ca dujjīvaṁ,
Life is hard for the conscientious,
นิจฺจํ สุจิคเวสินา✎ ร่าง
niccaṁ sucigavesinā;
always seeking purity,
อลีเนนาปคพฺเภน✎ ร่าง
Alīnenāppagabbhena,
neither clinging nor rude,
สุทฺธาชีเวน ปสฺสตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
suddhājīvena passatā.
pure of livelihood and discerning.
โย ปาณมติมาเปติ✎ ร่าง
Yo pāṇamatipāteti,
Take anyone in this world
มุสาวาทญฺจ ภาสติ✎ ร่าง
musāvādañca bhāsati;
who kills living creatures,
โลเก อทินฺนํ อาทิยติ✎ ร่าง
Loke adinnamādiyati,
speaks falsely, steals,
ปรทารญฺจ คจฺฉติ✎ ร่าง
paradārañca gacchati.
commits adultery,
สุราเมรยปานญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Surāmerayapānañca,
and indulges in drinking
โย นโร อนุยุญฺชติ✎ ร่าง
yo naro anuyuñjati;
beer and wine.
อิเธวเมโส โลกสฺมึ✎ ร่าง
Idheva meso lokasmiṁ,
Right here they dig up
มูลํ ขนติ อตฺตโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
mūlaṁ khaṇati attano.
the root of their own self.
เอวํ โภ ปุริส ชานาหิ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ bho purisa jānāhi,
Know this, my man:
ปาปธมฺมา อสญฺญตา✎ ร่าง
pāpadhammā asaññatā;
they are unrestrained and wicked.
มา ตํ โลโภ อธมฺโม จ✎ ร่าง
Mā taṁ lobho adhammo ca,
Don’t let that greed and unrighteousness
จิรํ ทุกฺขาย รนฺธยุํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ciraṁ dukkhāya randhayuṁ.
inflict pain on you for long.
ททาติ เว ยถาสทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
Dadāti ve yathāsaddhaṁ,
The people give according to their faith,
ยถาปสาทนํ ชโน✎ ร่าง
yathāpasādanaṁ jano;
according to their confidence.
ตตฺถ โย มงฺกุโต โหติ✎ ร่าง
Tattha yo ca maṅku bhavati,
If you get upset over that,
ปเรสํ ปานโภชเน✎ ร่าง
paresaṁ pānabhojane;
over others’ food and drink,
น โส ทิวา วา รตฺตึ วา✎ ร่าง
Na so divā vā rattiṁ vā,
you’ll not, by day or by night,
สมาธึ อธิคจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
samādhimadhigacchati.
become immersed in samādhi.
ยสฺสเจตํ สมุจฺฉินฺนํ✎ ร่าง
Yassa cetaṁ samucchinnaṁ,
Those who have cut that out,

มุลฆจฺจํ ๑- สมูหตํ✎ ร่าง
mūlaghaccaṁ samūhataṁ;
dug it up at the root, eradicated it,
ส เว ทิวา วา รตฺตึ วา✎ ร่าง
Sa ve divā vā rattiṁ vā,
they will, by day or by night,
สมาธึ อธิคจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
samādhimadhigacchati.
become immersed in samādhi.
นตฺถิ ราคสโม อคฺคิ✎ ร่าง
Natthi rāgasamo aggi,
There is no fire like greed,
นตฺถิ โทสสโม คโห✎ ร่าง
natthi dosasamo gaho;
no crime like hate,
นตฺถิ โมหสมํ ชาลํ✎ ร่าง
Natthi mohasamaṁ jālaṁ,
no net like delusion,
นตฺถิ ตณฺหาสมา นที ฯ✎ ร่าง
natthi taṇhāsamā nadī.
no river like craving.
สุทสฺสํ วชฺชมญฺเญสํ✎ ร่าง
Sudassaṁ vajjamaññesaṁ,
It’s easy to see the faults of others,
อตฺตโน ปน ทุทฺทสํ✎ ร่าง
attano pana duddasaṁ;
hard to see one’s own.
ปเรสํ หิ โส วชฺชานิ✎ ร่าง
Paresaṁ hi so vajjāni,
For the faults of others
โอปุนาติ ยถาภุสํ✎ ร่าง
opunāti yathā bhusaṁ;
are tossed high like hay,
อตฺตโน ปน ฉาเทติ✎ ร่าง
Attano pana chādeti,
while one’s own are hidden,
กลึว กิตวา สโฐ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kaliṁva kitavā saṭho.
as a cheat hides a bad hand.

ปรวชฺชานุปสฺสิสฺส✎ ร่าง
Paravajjānupassissa,
When you look for the flaws of others,

always finding fault,
อาสวา ตสฺส วฑฺฒนฺติ✎ ร่าง

your defilements only grow,
อารา โส อาสวกฺขยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
ārā so āsavakkhayā.
you’re far from ending defilements.

In the atmosphere there is no track,

nippapañcā tathāgatā.
the Realized Ones are free of proliferation.
อากาเสว ปทํ นตฺถิ✎ ร่าง
Ākāseva padaṁ natthi,
In the atmosphere there is no track,
สมโณ นตฺถิ พาหิโร✎ ร่าง
samaṇo natthi bāhire;
there’s no true ascetic outside here.
สงฺขารา สสฺสตา นตฺถิ✎ ร่าง
Saṅkhārā sassatā natthi,
No conditions last forever,
นตฺถิ พุทฺธานมิญฺชิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
natthi buddhānamiñjitaṁ.
the Awakened Ones are not shaken.
มลวคฺโค อฏฺฐารสโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
