มคฺคานฏฺฐงฺคิโก เสฏฺโฐ✎ ร่าง
Maggānaṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho,
Of paths, the eightfold is the best;

สจฺจานํ จตุโร ปทา✎ ร่าง
saccānaṁ caturo padā;
of truths, the four statements;
วิราโค เสฏฺโฐ ธมฺมานํ✎ ร่าง
Virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṁ,
dispassion is the best of things,
ทิปทานญฺจ จกฺขุมา✎ ร่าง
dvipadānañca cakkhumā.
and the Clear-eyed One is the best of humans.
เอเสว มคฺโค นตฺถญฺโญ✎ ร่าง
Eseva maggo natthañño,
This is the path, there is no other
ทสฺสนสฺส วิสุทฺธิยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dassanassa visuddhiyā;
for the purification of vision.
เอตญฺหิ ตุเมฺห ปฏิปชฺชถ✎ ร่าง
Etañhi tumhe paṭipajjatha,
You all must practice this,
มารสฺเสตํ ๑- ปโมหนํ✎ ร่าง
Mārassetaṁ pamohanaṁ.
it is the way to baffle Māra.
เอตญฺหิ ตุเมฺห ปฏิปนฺนา✎ ร่าง
Etañhi tumhe paṭipannā,
When you all are practicing this,
ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตํ กริสฺสถ ฯ✎ ร่าง
dukkhassantaṁ karissatha;
you’ll make an end of suffering.
อกฺขาโต โว มยา มคฺโค✎ ร่าง
Akkhāto vo mayā maggo,
I have explained the path to you
อญฺญาย สลฺลสตฺถนํ✎ ร่าง
aññāya sallakantanaṁ.
for extracting the thorn with wisdom.
ตุเมฺหหิ กิจฺจํ อาตปฺปํ✎ ร่าง
Tumhehi kiccamātappaṁ,
You yourselves must do the work,

อกฺขาตาโร ตถาคตา✎ ร่าง
akkhātāro tathāgatā;
the Realized Ones just show the way.
ปฏิปนฺนา ปโมกฺขนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Paṭipannā pamokkhanti,
Meditators practicing absorption
ฌายิโน มารพนฺธนา ฯ✎ ร่าง
jhāyino mārabandhanā.
are released from Māra’s bonds.
สพฺเพ สงฺขารา อนิจฺจาติ✎ ร่าง
“Sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā”ti,
All conditions are impermanent—

ยทา ปญฺญาย ปสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
yadā paññāya passati;
when this is seen with wisdom,
อถ นิพฺพินฺทติ ทุกฺเข✎ ร่าง

one grows disillusioned with suffering:
เอส มคฺโค วิสุทฺธิยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
esa maggo visuddhiyā.
this is the path to purity.
สพฺเพ สงฺขารา ทุกฺขาติ✎ ร่าง
“Sabbe saṅkhārā dukkhā”ti,

อุฏฺฐานกาลมฺหิ อนุฏฺฐหาโน✎ ร่าง
Uṭṭhānakālamhi anuṭṭhahāno,
They don’t get going when it’s time to start;
ยุวา พลี อาลสิยํ อุเปโต✎ ร่าง
Yuvā balī ālasiyaṁ upeto;
they’re young and strong, but given to sloth.
สํสนฺนสงฺกปฺปมโน กุสีโต✎ ร่าง
Saṁsannasaṅkappamano kusīto,
Their mind depressed in sunken thought,
ปญฺญาย มคฺคํ อลโส น วินฺทติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Paññāya maggaṁ alaso na vindati.
lazy and slothful, they can’t discern the path.
วาจานุรกฺขี มนสา สุสํวุโต✎ ร่าง
Vācānurakkhī manasā susaṁvuto,
Guarded in speech, restrained in mind,

กาเยน จ อกุสลํ น กยิรา✎ ร่าง
Kāyena ca nākusalaṁ kayirā;
doing no unskillful bodily deed.
เอเต ตโย กมฺมปเถ วิโสธเย✎ ร่าง
Ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye,
Purify these three ways of performing deeds,
อาราธเย มคฺคํ อิสิปฺปเวทิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ārādhaye maggamisippaveditaṁ.
and win the path known to seers.
โยคา เว ชายตี ๑- ภูริ✎ ร่าง
Yogā ve jāyatī bhūri,
From meditation springs wisdom,
อโยคา ภูริสงฺขโย✎ ร่าง
ayogā bhūrisaṅkhayo;
without meditation, wisdom ends.
เอตํ เทฺวธา ปถํ ญตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Etaṁ dvedhāpathaṁ ñatvā,
Knowing these two paths—
ภวาย วิภวาย จ✎ ร่าง
bhavāya vibhavāya ca;
of progress and decline—
ตถตฺตานํ นิเวเสยฺย✎ ร่าง
Tathāttānaṁ niveseyya,
you should conduct yourself
ยถา ภูริ ปวฑฺฒติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yathā bhūri pavaḍḍhati.
so that wisdom grows.

วนํ ฉินฺทถ มา รุกฺขํ✎ ร่าง
Vanaṁ chindatha mā rukkhaṁ,
Cut down the jungle, not just a tree;

วนโต ชายตี ภยํ✎ ร่าง
vanato jāyate bhayaṁ;
from the jungle springs fear.
เฉตฺวา วนญฺจ วนถญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Chetvā vanañca vanathañca,
Having cut down jungle and snarl,
นิพฺพนา โหถ ภิกฺขโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
nibbanā hotha bhikkhavo.
be free of jungles, mendicants!
ยาวํ หิ วนโถ น ฉิชฺชติ✎ ร่าง
Yāva hi vanatho na chijjati,
So long as the vine, no matter how small,
อณุมตฺโตปิ นรสฺส นาริสุ✎ ร่าง
Aṇumattopi narassa nārisu;
that ties a man to women is not cut,
ปฏิพทฺธมโน ว ตาว โส✎ ร่าง
Paṭibaddhamanova tāva so,
his mind remains trapped,
วจฺโฉ ขีรปโกว มาตริ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vaccho khīrapakova mātari.
like a calf suckling its mother.

อุจฺฉินฺท สิเนหมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
Ucchinda sinehamattano,
Cut out affection for oneself,

Kumudaṁ sāradikaṁva pāṇinā;
like plucking an autumn lotus.

Foster only the path to peace,
นิพฺพานํ สุคเตน เทสิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Nibbānaṁ sugatena desitaṁ.
the extinguishment the Holy One taught.
อิธ วสฺสํ วสิสฺสามิ✎ ร่าง
Idha vassaṁ vasissāmi,
“Here I will stay for the rains;
อิธ เหมนฺตคิมฺหิสุ✎ ร่าง
idha hemantagimhisu;
here for winter, here the summer”;
อิติ พาโล วิจินฺเตติ✎ ร่าง
Iti bālo vicinteti,
thus the fool thinks,
อนฺตรายํ น พุชฺฌติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
antarāyaṁ na bujjhati.
not realizing the danger.
ตํ ปุตฺตปสุสมฺมตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ puttapasusammattaṁ,
As a mighty flood sweeps away a sleeping village,
พฺยาสตฺตมนสํ นรํ✎ ร่าง
byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ;
death steals away a man
สุตฺตํ คามํ มโหโฆว✎ ร่าง
Suttaṁ gāmaṁ mahoghova,
who dotes on children and cattle,
มจฺจุ อาทาย คจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
maccu ādāya gacchati.
his mind caught up in them.
น สนฺติ ปุตฺตา ตาณาย✎ ร่าง
Na santi puttā tāṇāya,
Children provide you no shelter,
น ปิตา นปิ พนฺธวา✎ ร่าง
na pitā nāpi bandhavā;
nor does father, nor relatives.
อนฺตเกนาธิปนฺนสฺส✎ ร่าง
Antakenādhipannassa,
When you’re seized by the terminator,
นตฺถิ ญาตีสุ ตาณตา✎ ร่าง
natthi ñātīsu tāṇatā.
there’s no shelter in family.
เอตมตฺถวสํ ญตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Etamatthavasaṁ ñatvā,
Knowing the reason for this,
ปณฺฑิโต สีลสํวุโต✎ ร่าง
paṇḍito sīlasaṁvuto;
astute, and ethically restrained,
นิพฺพานคมนํ มคฺคํ✎ ร่าง
Nibbānagamanaṁ maggaṁ,
one would quickly clear the path
ขิปฺปเมว วิโสธเย ฯ✎ ร่าง
khippameva visodhaye.
that leads to extinguishment.
มคฺควคฺโค วีสติโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
