ปตฺตปฺผลํ มูลปฺผลํ ควิปฺผลํ✎ ร่าง
Pattapphalaṁ mūlaphalaṁ gavipphalaṁ;
millet, wild grains, broomcorn,
ธมฺเมน ลทฺธํ สตมสฺสมานา✎ ร่าง
Dhammena laddhaṁ satamasnamānā,
greens, tubers, and squashes.
น กามกามา อลิกํ ภณนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Na kāmakāmā alikaṁ bhaṇanti.
They don’t lie to get what they want.
ยทสฺสมาโน สุกตํ สุนิฏฺฐิตํ✎ ร่าง
Yadasnamāno sukataṁ suniṭṭhitaṁ,
But when you eat delicious food,

Parehi dinnaṁ payataṁ paṇītaṁ;
nicely cooked and prepared, and offered by others,

Sālīnamannaṁ paribhuñjamāno,
enjoying a dish of fine rice,
โส ภุญฺชสี ๒- กสฺสป อามคนฺธํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
So bhuñjasī kassapa āmagandhaṁ.
Kassapa, you eat putrefaction.
น อามคนฺโธ มม กปฺปตีติ✎ ร่าง
Na āmagandho mama kappatīti,
‘Putrefaction is not appropriate for me’—
อิจฺเจว ตฺวํ ภาสติ พฺรหฺมพนฺธุ✎ ร่าง
Icceva tvaṁ bhāsasi brahmabandhu;
so you said, O brahmin only by kin.
สาลีนมนฺนํ ปริภุญฺชมาโน✎ ร่าง
Sālīnamannaṁ paribhuñjamāno,
Yet here you are enjoying a dish of fine rice,
สกุนฺตมํเสหิ สุสงฺขเตหิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sakuntamaṁsehi susaṅkhatehi;
well prepared with the flesh of fowl.
ปุจฺฉามิ ตํ กสฺสป เอตมตฺถํ✎ ร่าง
Pucchāmi taṁ kassapa etamatthaṁ,
I’m asking you this, Kassapa:
กถํปกาโร ตว อามคนฺโธ✎ ร่าง
Kathaṁpakāro tava āmagandho”.
what do you take to be putrefaction?”
ปาณาติปาโต วธเฉทพนฺธนํ✎ ร่าง
“Pāṇātipāto vadhachedabandhanaṁ,
“Killing creatures, mutilation, murder, abduction;

Tough, callous calumniators,
มิตฺตทฺทุโน นิกฺกรุณาติมานิโน✎ ร่าง
Mittadduno nikkaruṇātimānino;
pitiless and arrogant betrayers of friends,
อทานสีลา น จ เทนฺติ กสฺสจิ✎ ร่าง
Adānasīlā na ca denti kassaci,

Niccuyyutā pecca tamaṁ vajanti ye;
and addicted to evil—those beings pass into darkness,

Na naggiyaṁ na muṇḍiyaṁ jaṭājallaṁ;
nudity or baldness, or dreadlocks or dirt,

Kharājināni nāggihuttassupasevanā,
not rough hides or serving the sacred flame,
เย วาปิ โลเก อมรา พหู ตปา✎ ร่าง

มนฺตาหุตี ยญฺญมุตูปเสวนา✎ ร่าง
Mantāhutī yaññamutūpasevanā,
not hymns or oblations, sacrifices or seasonal observances,
โสเธนฺติ มจฺจํ อวิติณฺณกงฺขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sodhenti maccaṁ avitiṇṇakaṅkhaṁ.
will cleanse a mortal not free of doubt.
โย ๕- เตสุ คุตฺโต วิทิตินฺทฺริโย จเร✎ ร่าง
Sotesu gutto viditindriyo care,
Guarding the streams of sense impressions, wander with faculties conquered,

Having heard the fine words of the Buddha,
