Abhūtavādī nirayaṁ upeti,
A liar goes to hell,

Yo vāpi katvā na karomi cāha;

Both are equal in the hereafter,
นิหีนกมฺมา มนุชา ปรตฺถ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Nihīnakammā manujā parattha.

Kāsāvakaṇṭhā bahavo,

nirayaṁ te upapajjare.

scorching, like a burning flame,
รฏฺฐปิณฺฑํ อสญฺญโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
raṭṭhapiṇḍamasaññato.
than to eat the nation’s alms.

จตฺตาริ ฐานานิ นโร ปมตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Cattāri ṭhānāni naro pamatto,
Four things befall a heedless man
อาปชฺชตี ปรทารูปเสวี✎ ร่าง
Āpajjati paradārūpasevī;
who sleeps with another’s wife:
อปุญฺญลาภํ นนิกามเสยฺยํ✎ ร่าง
Apuññalābhaṁ na nikāmaseyyaṁ,
wickedness, poor sleep,
นินฺทํ ตติยํ นิรยํ จตุตฺถํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Nindaṁ tatīyaṁ nirayaṁ catutthaṁ.
ill-repute, and rebirth in hell.
อปุญฺญลาโภ จ คตี จ ปาปิกา✎ ร่าง
Apuññalābho ca gatī ca pāpikā,
He accrues wickedness and is reborn in a bad place,
ภีตสฺส ภีตาย รตี จ โถกิกา✎ ร่าง
Bhītassa bhītāya ratī ca thokikā;
all so a frightened couple may snatch a moment’s pleasure,
ราชา จ ทณฺฑํ ครุกํ ปเณติ✎ ร่าง
Rājā ca daṇḍaṁ garukaṁ paṇeti,
for which rulers impose a heavy punishment.
ตสฺมา นโร ปรทารํ น เสเว ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tasmā naro paradāraṁ na seve.
That’s why a man should not sleep with another’s wife.
กุโส ยถา ทุคฺคหิโต✎ ร่าง
Kuso yathā duggahito,
When kusa grass is wrongly grasped
หตฺถเมวานุกนฺตติ✎ ร่าง
hatthamevānukantati;
it only cuts the hand.
สามญฺญํ ทุปฺปรามฏฺฐํ✎ ร่าง
Sāmaññaṁ dupparāmaṭṭhaṁ,
So too, the ascetic life, when wrongly taken,
นิรยายูปกฑฺฒติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
nirayāyupakaḍḍhati.
drags you to hell.
ยํ กิญฺจิ สิถิลํ กมฺมํ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ kiñci sithilaṁ kammaṁ,
Any lax act,
สงฺกิลิฏฺฐญฺจ ยํ วตํ✎ ร่าง
saṅkiliṭṭhañca yaṁ vataṁ;
any corrupt observance,
สงฺกสฺสรํ พฺรหฺมจริยํ✎ ร่าง
Saṅkassaraṁ brahmacariyaṁ,
or suspicious spiritual life,
น ตํ โหติ มหปฺผลํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
na taṁ hoti mahapphalaṁ.
is not very fruitful.
กยิรญฺเจ ๑- กยิรเถนํ✎ ร่าง
Kayirā ce kayirāthenaṁ,
If one is to do what should be done,
ทฬฺหเมนํ ปรกฺกเม✎ ร่าง
daḷhamenaṁ parakkame;
one should staunchly strive.
สิถิโล หิ ปริพฺพาโช✎ ร่าง
Sithilo hi paribbājo,
For the life gone forth when laxly led
ภิยฺโย อากิรเต รชํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
bhiyyo ākirate rajaṁ.
just stirs up dust all the more.

กตํ ทุกฺกตํ เสยฺโย✎ ร่าง
Akataṁ dukkaṭaṁ seyyo,
A bad deed is better left undone,

for it will plague you later on.

A good deed is better done,
ยํ กตฺวา นานุตปฺปติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ katvā nānutappati.
one that does not plague you.
นครํ ยถา ปจฺจนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Nagaraṁ yathā paccantaṁ,
As a frontier city

guttaṁ santarabāhiraṁ;
is guarded inside and out,

so you should ward yourselves—
ขโณ โว ๑- มา อุปจฺจคา✎ ร่าง
khaṇo vo mā upaccagā;
don’t let the moment pass you by.
ขณาตีตา หิ โสจนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Khaṇātītā hi socanti,
For if you miss your moment
นิรยมฺหิ สมปฺปิตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
nirayamhi samappitā.
you’ll grieve when sent to hell.
อลชฺชิตาเย ลชฺชนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Alajjitāye lajjanti,
Unashamed of what is shameful,
ลชฺชิตาเย น ลชฺชเร✎ ร่าง
lajjitāye na lajjare;
ashamed of what is not shameful;
มิจฺฉาทิฏฺฐิสมาทานา✎ ร่าง
Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā,
beings who uphold wrong view
สตฺตา คจฺฉนฺติ ทุคฺคตึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ.
go to a bad place.
อภเย ภยทสฺสิโน✎ ร่าง
Abhaye bhayadassino,
Seeing danger where there is none,
ภเย จ อภยทสฺสิโน✎ ร่าง
bhaye cābhayadassino;
and blind to the actual danger,
มิจฺฉาทิฏฺฐิสมาทานา✎ ร่าง
Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā,
beings who uphold wrong view
สตฺตา คจฺฉนฺติ ทุคฺคตึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ.
go to a bad place.
อวชฺเช วชฺชมติโน✎ ร่าง
Avajje vajjamatino,
Seeing fault where there is none,
วชฺเช จ อวชฺชทสฺสิโน✎ ร่าง
vajje cāvajjadassino;
and blind to the actual fault,
มิจฺฉาทิฏฺฐิสมาทานา✎ ร่าง
Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā,
beings who uphold wrong view
สตฺตา คจฺฉนฺติ ทุคฺคตึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ.

วชฺชญฺจ วชฺชโต ญตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Vajjañca vajjato ñatvā,
Knowing a fault as a fault
อวชฺชญฺจ อวชฺชโต✎ ร่าง
avajjañca avajjato;
and the faultless as faultless,
สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิสมาทานา✎ ร่าง
Sammādiṭṭhisamādānā,
beings who uphold right view
สตฺตา คจฺฉนฺติ สุคฺคตึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sattā gacchanti suggatiṁ.
go to a good place.
