ฉินฺท โสตํ ปรกฺกมฺม✎ ร่าง
Chinda sotaṁ parakkamma,
Cut the stream, striving!
กาเม ปนูท พฺราหฺมณ✎ ร่าง
kāme panuda brāhmaṇa;
Cast aside sensual pleasures, brahmin.
สงฺขารานํ ขยํ ญตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Saṅkhārānaṁ khayaṁ ñatvā,
Knowing the ending of conditions,
อกตญฺญูสิ พฺราหฺมณ ฯ✎ ร่าง
akataññūsi brāhmaṇa.
know the uncreated, brahmin.
ยทา ทฺวเยสุ ธมฺเมสุ✎ ร่าง
Yadā dvayesu dhammesu,
When a brahmin has gone beyond
ปารคู โหติ พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
pāragū hoti brāhmaṇo;
dualistic phenomena,
อถสฺส สพฺเพ สํโยคา✎ ร่าง
Athassa sabbe saṁyogā,
then they consciously
อตฺถํ คจฺฉนฺติ ชานโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
atthaṁ gacchanti jānato.
make an end of all fetters.
ยสฺส ปารํ อปารํ วา✎ ร่าง
Yassa pāraṁ apāraṁ vā,
One for whom there is no crossing over

ปาราปารํ น วิชฺชติ✎ ร่าง
pārāpāraṁ na vijjati;
or crossing back, or crossing over and back;
วีตทฺทรํ วิสญฺญุตฺตํ✎ ร่าง

stress-free, detached,
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

ฌายึ วิรชมาสีนํ✎ ร่าง
Jhāyiṁ virajamāsīnaṁ,
Absorbed, rid of hopes,
กตกิจฺจํ อนาสวํ✎ ร่าง
katakiccamanāsavaṁ;
their task completed, without defilements,
อุตฺตมตฺถํ อนุปฺปตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Uttamatthamanuppattaṁ,
arrived at the highest goal:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

ทิวา ตปติ อาทิจฺโจ✎ ร่าง
Divā tapati ādicco,
The sun blazes by day,
รตฺติมาภาติ จนฺทิมา✎ ร่าง
rattimābhāti candimā;
the moon radiates at night,
สนฺนทฺโธ ขตฺติโย ตปติ✎ ร่าง
Sannaddho khattiyo tapati,
the aristocrat shines in armor,
ฌายี ตปติ พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
jhāyī tapati brāhmaṇo;
and the brahmin shines in absorption.
อถ สพฺพมโหรตฺตึ✎ ร่าง
Atha sabbamahorattiṁ,
But all day and all night,
พุทฺโธ ตปติ เตชสา ฯ✎ ร่าง
buddho tapati tejasā.
the Buddha blazes with glory.

Aññatarabrāhmaṇapabbajitavatthu
พาหิตปาโป หิ พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
Bāhitapāpoti brāhmaṇo,
A brahmin’s so-called since they’ve banished evil,
สมจริยา สมโณติ วุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Samacariyā samaṇoti vuccati;
an ascetic’s so-called since they live a serene life.
ปพฺพาชยมตฺตโน มลํ✎ ร่าง
Pabbājayamattano malaṁ,
One who has renounced all stains
ตสฺมา ปพฺพชิโตติ วุจฺจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tasmā “pabbajito”ti vuccati.
is said to be a “renunciant”.
น พฺราหฺมณสฺส ปหเรยฺย✎ ร่าง
Na brāhmaṇassa pahareyya,
One should never strike a brahmin,

นาสฺส มุญฺเจถ พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
nāssa muñcetha brāhmaṇo;
nor should a brahmin retaliate.

Dhī brāhmaṇassa hantāraṁ,
Woe to the one who hurts a brahmin,
ตโต ธิ ยสฺส มุญฺจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tato dhī yassa muñcati.
and woe for the one who retaliates.
น พฺราหฺมณสฺเสตทกิญฺจิ เสยฺโย✎ ร่าง
Na brāhmaṇassetadakiñci seyyo,
Nothing is better for a brahmin
ยทานิเสโธ มนโส ปิเยหิ✎ ร่าง
Yadā nisedho manaso piyehi;
than to hold their mind back from attachment.
ยโต ยโต หึสมโน นิวตฺตติ✎ ร่าง
Yato yato hiṁsamano nivattati,
From wherever a cruel wish recoils,
ตโต ตโต สมฺมติเมว ทุกฺขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tato tato sammatimeva dukkhaṁ.
right there suffering subsides.

Mahāpajāpatigotamīvatthu
ยสฺส กาเยน วาจาย✎ ร่าง
Yassa kāyena vācāya,
Who does nothing wrong
มนสา นตฺถิ ทุกฺกตํ✎ ร่าง
manasā natthi dukkaṭaṁ;
by body, speech or mind,
สํวุตํ ตีหิ ฐาเนหิ✎ ร่าง
Saṁvutaṁ tīhi ṭhānehi,
restrained in these three respects,
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

ยมฺหา ธมฺมํ วิชาเนยฺย✎ ร่าง
Yamhā dhammaṁ vijāneyya,
You should graciously honor
สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธเทสิตํ✎ ร่าง
sammāsambuddhadesitaṁ;
the one from whom you learn the Dhamma
สกฺกจฺจํ นํ นมสฺเสยฺย✎ ร่าง
Sakkaccaṁ taṁ namasseyya,
taught by the awakened Buddha,
อคฺคิหุตฺตํว พฺราหฺมโณ ฯ✎ ร่าง
aggihuttaṁva brāhmaṇo.
as a brahmin honors the sacred flame.
น ชฏาหิ น โคตฺเตหิ✎ ร่าง
Na jaṭāhi na gottena,
Not by matted hair or family,

น ชจฺจา โหติ พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;
or birth is one a brahmin.
ยมฺหิ สจฺจญฺจ ธมฺโม จ✎ ร่าง
Yamhi saccañca dhammo ca,
Those who are truthful and principled:
โส สุจี ๒- โส จ พฺราหฺมโณ ฯ✎ ร่าง
so sucī so ca brāhmaṇo.
they are pure, they are brahmins.
กินฺ✎ ร่าง
Kuhakabrāhmaṇavatthu
เต ชฏาหิ ทุมฺเมธ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ te jaṭāhi dummedha,
Why the matted hair, you simpleton,
กินฺเต อชินสาฏิยา✎ ร่าง
kiṁ te ajinasāṭiyā;
and why the skin of deer?
อพฺภนฺตรนฺเต คหณํ✎ ร่าง
Abbhantaraṁ te gahanaṁ,
The tangle is inside you,
พาหิรํ ปริมชฺชสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
bāhiraṁ parimajjasi.
yet you polish up your outsides.
ปํสุกูลธรํ ชนฺตุํ✎ ร่าง
Paṁsukūladharaṁ jantuṁ,
A personage who wears robes of rags,
กิสนฺธมนิสนฺถตํ✎ ร่าง
kisaṁ dhamanisanthataṁ;
lean, their limbs showing veins,
เอกํ วนสฺมึ ฌายนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Ekaṁ vanasmiṁ jhāyantaṁ,
meditating alone in the forest,
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

น จาหํ พฺราหฺมณํ พฺรูมิ✎ ร่าง
Na cāhaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ brūmi,
I don’t call someone a brahmin
โยนิชํ มตฺติสมฺภวํ✎ ร่าง
yonijaṁ mattisambhavaṁ;
after the mother’s womb they’re born from.
โภวาที นาม โส โหติ✎ ร่าง
Bhovādi nāma so hoti,
If they still have attachments,
ส เว โหติ สกิญฺจโน✎ ร่าง
sace hoti sakiñcano;
they’re just someone who says “worthy”.
อกิญฺจนํ อนาทานํ✎ ร่าง
Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ,
Having nothing, taking nothing:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

สพฺพสํโยชนํ เฉตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Sabbasaṁyojanaṁ chetvā,
Having cut off all fetters

they have no anxiety.

เฉตฺวา นทฺธึ ๑- วรตฺตญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Chetvā naddhiṁ varattañca,
They’ve cut the strap and harness,

sandānaṁ sahanukkamaṁ;
the halter and bridle too,

with cross-bar lifted, they’re awakened:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

อกฺโกส✎ ร่าง
Akkosakabhāradvājavatthu
ํ วธพนฺธญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Akkosaṁ vadhabandhañca,
Abuse, killing, caging:
อทุฏฺโฐ โย ติติกฺขติ✎ ร่าง
aduṭṭho yo titikkhati;
they endure these without anger.
ขนฺตีพลํ พลาณีกํ✎ ร่าง
Khantībalaṁ balānīkaṁ,
Patience is their powerful army:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

อกฺโกธนํ วตวนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Akkodhanaṁ vatavantaṁ,
Not irritable or pretentious,
สีลวนฺตํ อนุสฺสทํ✎ ร่าง
sīlavantaṁ anussadaṁ;
dutiful in precepts and observances,
ทนฺตํ อนฺติมสารีรํ✎ ร่าง
Dantaṁ antimasārīraṁ,
tamed, bearing their final body:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

วาริ โปกฺขรปตฺเตว✎ ร่าง
Vāri pokkharapatteva,
Like water from a lotus leaf,
อารคฺเคริว สาสโป✎ ร่าง
āraggeriva sāsapo;
like a mustard seed off a pin-point,
โย น ลิมฺปติ กาเมสุ✎ ร่าง
Yo na limpati kāmesu,
sensual pleasures slip off them:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

โย ทุกฺขสฺส ปชานาติ✎ ร่าง
Yo dukkhassa pajānāti,
They understand for themselves
อิเธว ขยมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
idheva khayamattano;
the end of suffering in this life;
ปนฺนภารํ วิสญฺญุตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Pannabhāraṁ visaṁyuttaṁ,
with burden put down, detached:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

คมฺภีรปญฺญํ เมธาวึ✎ ร่าง
Gambhīrapaññaṁ medhāviṁ,
Deep in wisdom, intelligent,

maggāmaggassa kovidaṁ;
expert in the path and what is not the path;

arrived at the highest goal:

อสํสฏฺฐํ คหฏฺเฐหิ✎ ร่าง
Asaṁsaṭṭhaṁ gahaṭṭhehi,
Mixing with neither
อนาคาเรหิ จูภยํ✎ ร่าง
anāgārehi cūbhayaṁ;
householders nor the homeless;
อโนกสารึ อปฺปิจฺฉํ✎ ร่าง
Anokasārimappicchaṁ,
a migrant with no bastion, few in wishes:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

นิธาย ทณฺฑํ ภูเตสุ✎ ร่าง
Nidhāya daṇḍaṁ bhūtesu,
They’ve laid aside violence
ตเสสุ ถาวเรสุ จ✎ ร่าง
tasesu thāvaresu ca;
against creatures firm and frail;
โย น หนฺติ น ฆาเตติ✎ ร่าง
Yo na hanti na ghāteti,
not killing or making others kill:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

อวิรุทฺธํ วิรุทฺเธสุ✎ ร่าง
Aviruddhaṁ viruddhesu,
Not fighting among those who fight,
อตฺตทณฺเฑสุ นิพฺพุตํ✎ ร่าง
attadaṇḍesu nibbutaṁ;
quenched among those who have taken up arms,
สาทาเนสุ อนาทานํ✎ ร่าง
Sādānesu anādānaṁ,
not grasping among those who grasp:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

Yassa rāgo ca doso ca,
They’ve discarded greed and hate,

The words they utter

are polished, informative, and true,

โยธ ทีฆํ วา รสฺสํ วา✎ ร่าง
Yodha dīghaṁ va rassaṁ vā,
They don’t steal anything in the world,
อณุํ ถูลํ สุภาสุภํ✎ ร่าง
aṇuṁ thūlaṁ subhāsubhaṁ;
long or short,
โลเก อทินฺนํ นาทิยติ✎ ร่าง
Loke adinnaṁ nādiyati,
fine or coarse, beautiful or ugly:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

อาสา ยสฺส น วิชฺชนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Āsā yassa na vijjanti,
They have no hope
อสฺมึ โลเก ปรมฺหิ จ✎ ร่าง
asmiṁ loke paramhi ca;
in this world or the next;
นิราสยํ ๑- วิสํยุตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Nirāsāsaṁ visaṁyuttaṁ,
with no need for hope, detached:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

ยสฺสาลยา น วิชฺชนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yassālayā na vijjanti,
They have no clinging,
อญฺญาย อกถงฺกถี✎ ร่าง
aññāya akathaṅkathī;
knowledge has freed them of indecision,
อมโตคธํ อนุปฺปตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Amatogadhamanuppattaṁ,
they’ve arrived at the objective, freedom from death:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

โยธ ปุญฺญญฺจ ปาปญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Yodha puññañca pāpañca,
They’ve escaped clinging
อุโภ สงฺคํ อุปจฺจคา✎ ร่าง
ubho saṅgamupaccagā;
to both good and bad deeds;
อโสกํ วิรชํ สุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
Asokaṁ virajaṁ suddhaṁ,
sorrowless, stainless, pure:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

จนฺท✎ ร่าง
Candābhattheravatthu
ํว วิมลํ สุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
Candaṁva vimalaṁ suddhaṁ,
Pure as the spotless moon,
วิปฺปสนฺนมนาวิลํ✎ ร่าง
vippasannamanāvilaṁ;
clear and undisturbed,
นนฺทิภวปริกฺขีณํ✎ ร่าง
Nandībhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,
they’ve ended relish for rebirth:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

โย อิมํ ปลิปถํ ทุคฺคํ✎ ร่าง
Yomaṁ palipathaṁ duggaṁ,
They’ve got past this grueling swamp

saṁsāraṁ mohamaccagā;
of delusion, transmigration.
ติณฺโณ ปารคโต ฌายี✎ ร่าง

Meditating in stillness, free of indecision,
อเนโช อกถงฺกถี✎ ร่าง
anejo akathaṅkathī;
they have crossed over to the far shore.
อนุปาทาย นิพฺพุโต✎ ร่าง
Anupādāya nibbuto,
They’re quenched by not grasping:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

โยธ กาเม ปหนฺตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Yodha kāme pahantvāna,
They’ve given up sensual stimulations,
อนาคาโร ปริพฺพเช✎ ร่าง
anāgāro paribbaje;
and have gone forth from lay life;
กามภวปริกฺขีณํ✎ ร่าง
Kāmabhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,
they’ve ended rebirth in the sensual realm:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.
that’s who I declare a brahmin.
โยธ ตณฺหํ ปหนฺตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Yodha taṇhaṁ pahantvāna,
They’ve given up craving,
อนาคาโร ปริพฺพเช✎ ร่าง
anāgāro paribbaje;
and have gone forth from lay life;
ตณฺหาภวปริกฺขีณํ✎ ร่าง
Taṇhābhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,
they’ve ended craving to be reborn:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.
that’s who I declare a brahmin.

Yodha taṇhaṁ pahantvāna,
They’ve given up craving,

anāgāro paribbaje;
and have gone forth from lay life;

Taṇhābhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,
they’ve ended craving to be reborn:

หิตฺวา มานุสกํ โยคํ✎ ร่าง
Hitvā mānusakaṁ yogaṁ,
They’ve thrown off the human yoke,

dibbaṁ yogaṁ upaccagā;
and slipped out of the heavenly yoke;

unyoked from all yokes:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

หิตฺวา รติญฺจ อรติญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Hitvā ratiñca aratiñca,
Giving up desire and discontent,

sītibhūtaṁ nirūpadhiṁ;
they’re cooled and free of attachments;

a hero, master of the whole world:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

จุตึ โย เวทิ สตฺตานํ✎ ร่าง
Cutiṁ yo vedi sattānaṁ,
They know the passing away
อุปปตฺติญฺจ สพฺพโส✎ ร่าง
upapattiñca sabbaso;
and rebirth of all beings;
อสตฺตํ สุคตํ พุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
Asattaṁ sugataṁ buddhaṁ,
unattached, holy, awakened:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.
that’s who I declare a brahmin.
ยสฺส คตึ น ชานนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yassa gatiṁ na jānanti,
Gods, centaurs, and humans
เทวา คนฺธพฺพมานุสา✎ ร่าง
devā gandhabbamānusā;
don’t know their destiny;
ขีณาสวํ อรหนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Khīṇāsavaṁ arahantaṁ,
the perfected ones with defilements ended:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.
that’s who I declare a brahmin.

ยสฺส ปุเร จ ปจฺฉา จ✎ ร่าง
Yassa pure ca pacchā ca,
They have nothing before or after,
มชฺเฌ จ นตฺถิ กิญฺจนํ✎ ร่าง
majjhe ca natthi kiñcanaṁ;
or even in between.
อกิญฺจนํ อนาทานํ✎ ร่าง
Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ,
Having nothing, taking nothing:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

ุสภํ ปวรํ วีรํ✎ ร่าง
Usabhaṁ pavaraṁ vīraṁ,
Captain of the herd, excellent hero,
มเหสึ วิชิตาวินํ✎ ร่าง
mahesiṁ vijitāvinaṁ;
great seer and victor;
อเนชํ นฺหาตกํ พุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
Anejaṁ nhātakaṁ buddhaṁ,
unstirred, washed, awakened:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.
that’s who I declare a brahmin.
ปุพฺเพนิวาสํ โย เวทิ✎ ร่าง
Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedi,
One who knows their past lives,

saggāpāyañca passati;
sees heaven and places of loss,
อโถ ชาติกฺขยํ ปตฺโต✎ ร่าง

and has attained the end of rebirth;
อภิญฺญา โวสิโต มุนิ✎ ร่าง
abhiññāvosito muni;
a sage of perfect insight
สพฺพโวสิตโวสานํ✎ ร่าง
Sabbavositavosānaṁ,
at the summit of spiritual perfection:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

พฺราหฺมณวคฺโค ฉพฺพีสติโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Brāhmaṇavaggo chabbīsatimo.

Ettāvatā sabbapaṭhame yamakavagge cuddasa vatthūni, appamādavagge nava, cittavagge nava, pupphavagge dvādasa, bālavagge pannarasa, paṇḍitavagge ekādasa, arahantavagge dasa, sahassavagge cuddasa, pāpavagge dvādasa, daṇḍavagge ekādasa, jarāvagge nava, attavagge dasa, lokavagge ekādasa, buddhavagge nava, sukhavagge aṭṭha, piyavagge nava, kodhavagge aṭṭha, malavagge dvādasa, dhammaṭṭhavagge dasa, maggavagge dvādasa, pakiṇṇakavagge nava, nirayavagge nava, nāgavagge aṭṭha, taṇhāvagge dvādasa, bhikkhuvagge dvādasa, brāhmaṇavagge cattālīsāti pañcādhikāni tīṇi vatthusatāni.
