ราชาหมสฺมิ เสลา (ติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Rājāhamasmi selāti,
“I am a king, Sela”,
—
(bhagavā)
said the Buddha,
ธมฺมราชา อนุตฺตโร✎ ร่าง
Dhammarājā anuttaro;
“the supreme king of the teaching.
ธมฺเมน จกฺกํ วตฺเตมิ✎ ร่าง
Dhammena cakkaṁ vattemi,
By the teaching I roll forth the wheel
จกฺกํ อปฺปติวตฺติยํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Cakkaṁ appaṭivattiyaṁ”.
which cannot be rolled back.”
สมฺพุทฺโธ ปฏิชานาสิ (อิติ เสโล พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
“Sambuddho paṭijānāsi,
“You claim to be awakened,”
—
(iti selo brāhmaṇo)
said Sela the brahmin,
ธมฺมราชา อนุตฺตโร✎ ร่าง
Dhammarājā anuttaro;
“the supreme king of the teaching.
ธมฺเมน จกฺกํ วตฺเตมิ✎ ร่าง
‘Dhammena cakkaṁ vattemi’,
‘I roll forth the teaching’:
อิติ ภาสสิ โคตม✎ ร่าง
Iti bhāsasi gotama.
so you say, Gotama.
โก นุ เสนาปตี โภโต✎ ร่าง
Ko nu senāpati bhoto,
Then who is your general,
สาวโก สตฺถุรนฺวโย✎ ร่าง
Sāvako satthuranvayo;
the disciple who follows the Teacher’s way?
โก เต อิมํ อนุวตฺเตติ✎ ร่าง
Ko te tamanuvatteti,
Who keeps rolling the wheel
ธมฺมจกฺกํ ปวตฺติตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dhammacakkaṁ pavattitaṁ”.
of the teaching you rolled forth?”
มยา ปวตฺติตํ จกฺกํ (เลสาติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Mayā pavattitaṁ cakkaṁ,
“By me the wheel was rolled forth,”

said the Buddha,
ธมฺมจกฺกํ อนุตฺตรํ✎ ร่าง
Dhammacakkaṁ anuttaraṁ;
“the supreme wheel of the teaching.
สารีปุตฺโต อนุวตฺเตติ✎ ร่าง
Sāriputto anuvatteti,
Sāriputta, taking after the Realized One,
อนุชาโต ตถาคตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Anujāto tathāgataṁ.
keeps it rolling on.
อภิญฺเญยฺยํ อภิญฺญาตํ✎ ร่าง
Abhiññeyyaṁ abhiññātaṁ,
I have known what should be known,
ภาเวตพฺพญฺจ ภาวิตํ✎ ร่าง
Bhāvetabbañca bhāvitaṁ;
and developed what should be developed,
ปหาตพฺพํ ปหีนมฺเม✎ ร่าง
Pahātabbaṁ pahīnaṁ me,
and given up what should be given up:
ตสฺมา พุทฺโธสฺมิ พฺราหฺมณ✎ ร่าง
Tasmā buddhosmi brāhmaṇa.
and so, brahmin, I am a Buddha.
วินยสฺสุ มยิ กงฺขํ✎ ร่าง
Vinayassu mayi kaṅkhaṁ,
Dispel your doubt in me—

Adhimuccassu brāhmaṇa;
make up your mind, brahmin!

Dullabhaṁ dassanaṁ hoti,
The sight of a Buddha
สมฺพุทฺธานํ อภิณฺหโส ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sambuddhānaṁ abhiṇhaso.
is hard to find again.
ยสฺส ๑- เว ทุลฺลโภ โลเก✎ ร่าง
Yesaṁ ve dullabho loke,
I am a Buddha, brahmin,

Pātubhāvo abhiṇhaso;
the supreme surgeon,
โสหํ พฺราหฺมณ สมฺพุทฺโธ✎ ร่าง
Sohaṁ brāhmaṇa sambuddho,
one of those whose appearance in the world
สลฺลกตฺโต อนุตฺตโร ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sallakatto anuttaro.
is hard to find again.
พฺรหฺมภูโต อติตุโล✎ ร่าง
Brahmabhūto atitulo,
A manifestation of divinity, unequaled,
มารเสนปฺปมทฺทโน✎ ร่าง
Mārasenappamaddano;
crusher of Māra’s army;
สพฺพามิตฺเต วสีกตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Sabbāmitte vasīkatvā,
having subdued all my opponents,
โมทามิ อกุโตภโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Modāmi akutobhayo”.
I rejoice, fearing nothing from any quarter.”
อิมํ โภนฺโต ๒- นิสาเมถ✎ ร่าง
“Imaṁ bhavanto nisāmetha,
“Pay heed, good fellows, to what
ยถา ภาสติ จกฺขุมา✎ ร่าง
Yathā bhāsati cakkhumā;
is spoken by the Clear-eyed One.
สลฺลกตฺโต มหาวีโร✎ ร่าง
Sallakatto mahāvīro,
The surgeon, the great hero,
สีโหว นทตี วเน ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sīhova nadatī vane.
roars like a lion in the jungle.
พฺรหฺมภูตํ อติตุลํ✎ ร่าง
Brahmabhūtaṁ atitulaṁ,
A manifestation of divinity, unequaled,

มารเสนปฺปมทฺทนํ✎ ร่าง
Mārasenappamaddanaṁ;
crusher of Māra’s army;
โก ทิสฺวา นปฺปสีเทยฺย✎ ร่าง

who would not be inspired by him,
อปิ กณฺหาภิชาติโก ฯ✎ ร่าง
Api kaṇhābhijātiko.
even one born in a dark class?
โย มํ อิจฺฉติ อเนฺวตุ✎ ร่าง
Yo maṁ icchati anvetu,
Those who wish may follow me;
โย วา นิจฺฉติ คจฺฉตุ✎ ร่าง
Yo vā nicchati gacchatu;
those who don’t may go.
อิธาหํ ปพฺพชิสฺสามิ✎ ร่าง
Idhāhaṁ pabbajissāmi,
Right here, I’ll go forth in his presence,
วรปญฺญสฺส สนฺติเก ฯ✎ ร่าง
Varapaññassa santike”.
the one of such outstanding wisdom.”
เอวํ เจ ๓- รุจฺจติ โภโต✎ ร่าง
“Evañce ruccati bhoto,
“Sir, if you endorse
สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสาสนํ✎ ร่าง
Sammāsambuddhasāsane;
the teaching of the Buddha,
มยมฺปิ ปพฺพชิสฺสาม✎ ร่าง
Mayampi pabbajissāma,
we’ll also go forth in his presence,
วรปญฺญสฺส สนฺติเก ฯ✎ ร่าง
Varapaññassa santike”.
the one of such outstanding wisdom.”
พฺราหฺมณา ติสตา อิเม✎ ร่าง
Brāhmaṇā tisatā ime,
“These three hundred brahmins
ยาจนฺติ ปญฺชลีกตา✎ ร่าง
Yācanti pañjalīkatā;
with cupped palms held up, ask:
พฺรหฺมจริยํ จริสฺสาม✎ ร่าง
“Brahmacariyaṁ carissāma,
‘May we lead the spiritual life
ภควา ตว สนฺติเก ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bhagavā tava santike”.
in your presence, Blessed One?’”
สฺวากฺขาตํ พฺรหฺมจริยํ (เสลาติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Svākkhātaṁ brahmacariyaṁ,
“The spiritual life is well explained,”

said the Buddha,
สนฺทิฏฺฐิกํ อกาลิกํ✎ ร่าง
Sandiṭṭhikamakālikaṁ;
“apparent in the present life, immediately effective.
ยตฺถ อโมฆา ปพฺพชฺชา✎ ร่าง
Yattha amoghā pabbajjā,
Here the going forth isn’t in vain
อปฺปมตฺตสฺส สิกฺขโตติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Appamattassa sikkhato”ti.
for one who trains with diligence.”
