เอวมฺเม สุตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

เอกํ สมยํ ภควา อุรุเวลายํ
วิหรติ นชฺชา เนรญฺชราย ตีเร อชปาลนิโคฺรเธ ปฐมาภิสมฺพุทฺโธ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā uruvelāyaṁ viharati najjā nerañjarāya tīre ajapālanigrodhe paṭhamābhisambuddho.
At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in Uruvelā at the goatherd’s banyan tree on the bank of the Nerañjarā River.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน ภควา สตฺตาหํ เอกปลฺลงฺเกน นิสินฺโน
โหติ วิมุตฺติสุขํ ปฏิสํเวที ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā sattāhaṁ ekapallaṅkena nisinno hoti vimuttisukhapaṭisaṁvedī.
There the Buddha sat cross-legged for seven days without moving, experiencing the bliss of freedom.
อถ โข ภควา ตสฺส สตฺตาหสฺส
อจฺจเยน ตมฺหา สมาธิมฺหา วุฏฺฐาสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā tassa sattāhassa accayena tamhā samādhimhā vuṭṭhāsi.
When seven days had passed, the Buddha emerged from that state of immersion.
อถ โข อญฺญตโร
หุหุํกชาติโก ๑- พฺราหฺมโณ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา
ภควตา สทฺธึ สมฺโมทิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho aññataro huṁhuṅkajātiko brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then a certain brahmin, one of those who murmured the mystic syllable huṁ, huṁ, went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.
สมฺโมทนียํ กถํ สาราณียํ วีติสาเรตฺวา
เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐาสิ ฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิโต โข โส พฺราหฺมโณ ภควนฺตํ
เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho so brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he stood to one side and said,
กิตฺตาวตา นุโข โภ โคตม พฺราหฺมโณ โหติ กตเม
จ ปน พฺราหฺมณกรณา ธมฺมาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“kittāvatā nu kho, bho gotama, brāhmaṇo hoti, katame ca pana brāhmaṇakaraṇā dhammā”ti?
“Worthy Gotama, how do you define a brahmin? And what are the things that make one a brahmin?”
อถ โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ

วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

โย พฺราหฺมโณ พาหิตปาปธมฺโม✎ ร่าง
“Yo brāhmaṇo bāhitapāpadhammo,
“Any brahmin who has banished bad qualities—
นิหุหุํโก นิกฺกสาโว ยตตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Nihuṁhuṅko nikkasāvo yatatto;
not murmuring the mystic syllable huṁ, unstained, self-controlled,
เวทนฺตคู วุสิตพฺรหฺมจริโย✎ ร่าง
Vedantagū vūsitabrahmacariyo,
a complete knowledge master who has completed the spiritual journey—
ธมฺเมน โส พฺราหฺมโณ ๑- พฺรหฺมวาทํ วเทยฺย✎ ร่าง
Dhammena so brahmavādaṁ vadeyya;
they may legitimately proclaim the divine doctrine;
ยสฺสุสฺสทา นตฺถิ กุหิญฺจิ โลเกติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yassussadā natthi kuhiñci loke”ti.
who have no pretensions about anything in the world.”
