said Venerable Puṇṇaka,
อเนชํ มูลทสฺสาวึ (อิจฺจายสฺมา ปุณฺณโก)
อตฺถี ปเญฺหน อาคมํ✎ ร่าง
Atthi pañhena āgamaṁ;
“I have come seeking with a question.
กึ นิสฺสิตา อิสโย มนุชา✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ nissitā isayo manujā,
On what grounds have seers and men,
ขตฺติยา พฺราหฺมณา เทวตานํ✎ ร่าง
Khattiyā brāhmaṇā devatānaṁ;
aristocrats and brahmins here in the world
ยญฺญมกปฺปึสุ ๑- ปุถูธ ๒- โลเก✎ ร่าง
Yaññamakappayiṁsu puthūdha loke,
performed so many different sacrifices to the gods?
ปุจฺฉามิ ตํ ภควา พฺรูหิ เม ตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pucchāmi taṁ bhagavā brūhi me taṁ”.
I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.”
เย เกจิเม อิสโย มนุชา (ปุณฺณกาติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Ye kecime isayo manujā,
“Whatever seers and men,”

replied the Buddha,
ขตฺติยา พฺราหฺมณา เทวตานํ✎ ร่าง
Khattiyā brāhmaṇā devatānaṁ;
“aristocrats and brahmins here in the world
ยญฺญมกปฺปึสุ ๑- ปุถูธ ๒- โลเก✎ ร่าง
Yaññamakappayiṁsu puthūdha loke,
have performed so many different sacrifices to the gods:
อาสึสมานา ปุณฺณก อิตฺถตํ✎ ร่าง
Āsīsamānā puṇṇaka itthattaṁ;
all performed sacrifices bound to old age,
ชรํ ๔- สิตา ยญฺญมกปฺปยึสุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Jaraṁ sitā yaññamakappayiṁsu”.

กจฺจิสฺสุ เต ภควา (ยญฺญปเถ) อปฺปมตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Kaccissu te bhagavā yaññapathe appamattā;
being diligent in the technique of sacrifice,
อตารุ ชาติญฺจ ชรญฺจ มาริส✎ ร่าง
Atāruṁ jātiñca jarañca mārisa,
have they crossed over rebirth and old age, good fellow?
ปุจฺฉามิ ตํ ภควา พฺรูหิ เม ตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pucchāmi taṁ bhagavā brūhi me taṁ”.
I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.”
อาสึสนฺติ ๑- โถมยนฺติ (อภิชปฺปนฺติ) ชุหนฺติ (ปุณฺณกาติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Āsīsanti thomayanti abhijappanti juhanti,
“Hoping, invoking, praying, and worshiping,”

replied the Buddha,
กามาภิชปฺปนฺติ ปฏิจฺจ ลาภํ✎ ร่าง
Kāmābhijappanti paṭicca lābhaṁ;
“they pray for pleasure derived from profit.
เต ยาชโยคา ภวราครตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Te yājayogā bhavarāgarattā,
Devoted to sacrifice, besotted by rebirth,
นาตรึสุ ชาติชรนฺติ พฺรูมิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Nātariṁsu jātijaranti brūmi”.

“Saṅkhāya lokasmi paroparāni,
“Having appraised the world high and low,”

ยสฺสิญฺชิตํ นตฺถิ กุหิญฺจิ โลเก✎ ร่าง
Yassiñjitaṁ natthi kuhiñci loke;
“there is nothing in the world that disturbs them.
สนฺโต วิธูโม อนิโฆ นิราโส✎ ร่าง
Santo vidhūmo anīgho nirāso,
Peaceful, unclouded, untroubled, with no need for hope—
อตาริ โส ชาติชรญฺจ พฺรูมีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atāri so jātijaranti brūmī”ti.
