said Venerable Dhotaka,
ปุจฺฉามิ ตํ ภควา พฺรูหิเมตํ (อิจฺจายสฺมา โธตโก)
วาจาภิกงฺขามิ มเหสิ ตุยฺหํ✎ ร่าง
Vācābhikaṅkhāmi mahesi tuyhaṁ;
“I long for your voice, great seer.
ตว สุตฺวาน นิคฺโฆสํ✎ ร่าง
Tava sutvāna nigghosaṁ,
After hearing your message,
สิกฺเข นิพฺพานมตฺตโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sikkhe nibbānamattano”.
I shall train myself for extinguishment.”
เตน หาตปฺปํ กโรหิ (โธตกาติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Tenahātappaṁ karohi,
“Well then, be keen, alert,”

(dhotakāti bhagavā)
replied the Buddha,
อิเธวนิปโกสโต✎ ร่าง
Idheva nipako sato;
“and mindful right here.
อิโต สุตฺวาน นิคฺโฆสํ✎ ร่าง
Ito sutvāna nigghosaṁ,
After hearing this message, go on
สิกฺเข นิพฺพานมตฺตโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sikkhe nibbānamattano”.
and train yourself for extinguishment.”
ปสฺสามหํ เทวมนุสฺสโลเก✎ ร่าง
“Passāmahaṁ devamanussaloke,
“I see in the world of gods and humans

อกิญฺจนํ พฺราหฺมณํ อิริยมานํ✎ ร่าง
Akiñcanaṁ brāhmaṇamiriyamānaṁ;
a brahmin travelling with nothing.
ตํ ตํ นมสฺสามิ สมนฺตจกฺขุ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ taṁ namassāmi samantacakkhu,
I bow especially to you, All-seer:
ปมุญฺจ มํ สกฺก กถงฺกถาหิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pamuñca maṁ sakka kathaṅkathāhi”.
release me, Sakyan, from my indecisions.”
นาหํ สมิสฺสามิ ๑- ปโมจนาย✎ ร่าง
“Nāhaṁ sahissāmi pamocanāya,
“I am not able to release anyone

กถงฺกถึ โธตก กญฺจิ โลเก✎ ร่าง
Kathaṅkathiṁ dhotaka kañci loke;
in the world who is indecisive, Dhotaka.
ธมฺมญฺจ เสฏฺฐํ อาชานมาโน✎ ร่าง
Dhammañca seṭṭhaṁ abhijānamāno,
But when you understand the best of teachings,
เอวํ ตฺวํ โอฆมิมํ ตเรสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ tuvaṁ oghamimaṁ taresi”.
you shall cross this flood.”
อนุสาส พฺรเหฺม กรุณายมาโน✎ ร่าง
“Anusāsa brahme karuṇāyamāno,
“Teach me, brahmin, out of compassion,

Vivekadhammaṁ yamahaṁ vijaññaṁ;
the principle of seclusion so that I may understand.
ยถาหํ อากาโส จ ๓- อพฺยาปชฺชมาโน✎ ร่าง
Yathāhaṁ ākāsova abyāpajjamāno,
I wish to practice right here, peaceful, independent,
อิเธว สนฺโต อสิโต จเรยฺยํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Idheva santo asito careyyaṁ”.
unobstructed as space itself.”
กิตฺตยิสฺสามิ เต สนฺตึ (โธตกาติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Kittayissāmi te santiṁ,
“I shall extol that peace for you,”

(dhotakāti bhagavā)
replied the Buddha,
ทิฏฺเฐ ธมฺเม อนีติหํ✎ ร่าง
Diṭṭhe dhamme anītihaṁ;
“that is apparent in the present, not relying on tradition.
ยํ วิทิตฺวา สโต จรํ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ viditvā sato caraṁ,
Having understood it, one who lives mindfully
ตเร โลเก วิสตฺติกํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tare loke visattikaṁ”.
may cross over clinging in the world.”
ตญฺจาหํ อภินนฺทามิ✎ ร่าง
“Tañcāhaṁ abhinandāmi,
“And I rejoice, great seer,
มเหสิ สนฺติมุตฺตมํ✎ ร่าง
mahesi santimuttamaṁ;
in that supreme peace,
ยํ วิทิตฺวา สโต จรํ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ viditvā sato caraṁ,
having understood which, one who lives mindfully
ตเร โลเก วิสตฺติกํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tare loke visattikaṁ”.
may cross over clinging in the world.”
ยงฺกิญฺจิ สมฺปชานาสิ (โธตกาติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Yaṁ kiñci sampajānāsi,
“Once you have understood that everything,”

replied the Buddha,
อุทฺธํ อโธ ติริยญฺจาปิ มชฺเฌ✎ ร่าง
Uddhaṁ adho tiriyañcāpi majjhe;
“you are aware of in the world—
เอวํ ๔- วิทิตฺวา สงฺโคติ โลเก✎ ร่าง
Etaṁ viditvā saṅgoti loke,
above, below, all round, between—
ภวาภวาย มากาสิ ตณฺหนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bhavābhavāya mākāsi taṇhan”ti.
is a snare, don’t crave for life after life.”
