เอวมฺเม สุตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา ราชคเห วิหรติ
เวฬุวเน กลนฺทกนิวาเป ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน อายสฺมา
มหากสฺสโป ปิปฺผลิคุหายํ วิหรติ อาพาธิโก โหติ ทุกฺขิโต
พาฬฺหคิลาโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā mahākassapo pippaliguhāyaṁ viharati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno.
Now at that time Venerable Mahākassapa was staying in the Pipphali cave, and he was sick, suffering, gravely ill.
อถ โข อายสฺมา มหากสฺสโป อปเรน สมเยน
ตมฺหา อาพาธา วุฏฺฐาสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā mahākassapo aparena samayena tamhā ābādhā vuṭṭhāsi.
Then after some time he recovered from that illness.
อถ โข อายสฺมโต มหากสฺสปสฺส
ตมฺหา อาพาธา วุฏฺฐิตสฺส เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmato mahākassapassa tamhā ābādhā vuṭṭhitassa etadahosi:
It occurred to him,
ยนฺนูนาหํ ราชคหํ ปิณฺฑาย
ปาวิเสยฺยนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“yannūnāhaṁ rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya paviseyyan”ti.
“Why not enter Rājagaha for almsfood?”
เตน โข ปน สมเยน ปญฺจมตฺตานิ เทวตาสตานิ อุสฺสุกํ
อาปนฺนานิ โหนฺติ อายสฺมโต มหากสฺสปสฺส ปิณฺฑปาตปฏิลาภาย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tena kho pana samayena pañcamattāni devatāsatāni ussukkaṁ āpannāni honti āyasmato mahākassapassa piṇḍapātapaṭilābhāya.
Now at that time five hundred deities were ready and eager for the chance to offer alms to Mahākassapa.
อถโข อายสฺมา มหากสฺสโป ตานิ ปญฺจมตฺตานิ เทวตาสตานิ
ปฏิกฺขิปิตฺวา ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย
ราชคหํ ปิณฺฑาย ปาวิสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā mahākassapo tāni pañcamattāni devatāsatāni paṭikkhipitvā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi—
But Mahākasspa turned down those deities. In the morning, he robed up, took his bowl and robe, and entered Rājagaha for alms.
เยน ทลิทฺทวิสิขา กปณวิสิขา
เปสการวิสิขา ฯ✎ ร่าง
yena daliddavisikhā kapaṇavisikhā pesakāravisikhā.
He went to the streets of the poor, the destitute, and the embroiderers.
อทฺทสา โข ภควา อายสฺมนฺตํ มหากสฺสปํ
ราชคเห ปิณฺฑาย จรนฺตํ เยน ทลิทฺทวิสิขา กปณวิสิขา
เปสการวิสิขา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ mahākassapaṁ rājagahe piṇḍāya carantaṁ yena daliddavisikhā kapaṇavisikhā pesakāravisikhā.
The Buddha saw him wandering for alms in the streets of the poor, the destitute, and the embroiderers.
อถ โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ
อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
อนญฺญโปสิมญฺญาตํ✎ ร่าง
“Anaññaposimaññātaṁ,
“The stranger, providing for no other,

ทนฺตํ สาเร ปติฏฺฐิตํ✎ ร่าง
dantaṁ sāre patiṭṭhitaṁ;
tamed, consolidated in the core,
ขีณาสวํ วนฺตโทสํ✎ ร่าง
Khīṇāsavaṁ vantadosaṁ,
with defilements ended and flaws purged:
ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇan”ti.
