(iccāyasmā jatukaṇṇi)
said Venerable Jatukaṇṇī,
สุตฺวานหํ วีร อกามกามึ (อิจฺจายสฺมา ชตุกณฺณี)
โอฆาติคํ ปุฏฺฐุมกามมาคมํ✎ ร่าง
Oghātigaṁ puṭṭhumakāmamāgamaṁ;
“who has passed over the flood, I’ve come with a question for that desireless one.
สนฺตีปทํ พฺรูหิ สหาชเนตฺต✎ ร่าง
Santipadaṁ brūhi sahajanetta,
Tell me the state of peace, O natural visionary.
ยถาตจฺฉํ ภควา พฺรูหิ เม ตํ✎ ร่าง
Yathātacchaṁ bhagavā brūhi metaṁ.
Tell me this, Blessed One, as it really is.
ภควา หิ กาเม อภิภุยฺย อิริยติ✎ ร่าง
Bhagavā hi kāme abhibhuyya iriyati,
For, having mastered sensual desires, the Blessed One proceeds,
อาทิจฺโจว ปฐวึ เตชี เตชสา✎ ร่าง
Ādiccova pathaviṁ tejī tejasā;
as the blazing sun shines on the earth.
ปริตฺตปญฺญสฺส เม ภูริปญฺญ✎ ร่าง
Parittapaññassa me bhūripañña,
May you of vast wisdom explain the teaching
อาจิกฺข ธมฺมํ ยมหํ วิชญฺญํ✎ ร่าง
Ācikkha dhammaṁ yamahaṁ vijaññaṁ;
to me of little wisdom so that I may understand
ชาติชราย อิธ วิปฺปหานํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Jātijarāya idha vippahānaṁ”.

กาเมสุ วินย เคธํ (ชตุกณฺณีติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Kāmesu vinaya gedhaṁ,
“With desire for sensual pleasures dispelled,”

replied the Buddha,
เนกฺขมฺมํ ทฏฺฐุ เขมโต✎ ร่าง
Nekkhammaṁ daṭṭhu khemato;
“seeing renunciation as sanctuary,
อุคฺคหิตํ นิรตฺตํ วา✎ ร่าง
Uggahītaṁ nirattaṁ vā,
don’t be taking up or putting down
มา เต วิชฺชิตฺถ กิญฺจนํ✎ ร่าง
Mā te vijjittha kiñcanaṁ.
anything at all.
ยํ ปุพฺเพ ตํ วิโสเสหิ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ pubbe taṁ visosehi,
What came before, let wither away,
ปจฺฉา เต มาหุ กิญฺจนํ✎ ร่าง
pacchā te māhu kiñcanaṁ;
and after, let there be nothing.
มชฺเฌ เจ โน คเหสฺสสิ✎ ร่าง
Majjhe ce no gahessasi,
If you don’t grasp at the middle,
อุปสนฺโต จริสฺสสิ✎ ร่าง
upasanto carissasi.
you will live at peace.
สพฺพโส นามรูปสฺมึ✎ ร่าง
Sabbaso nāmarūpasmiṁ,
One rid of greed, brahmin,

Vītagedhassa brāhmaṇa;
for the whole realm of name and form,
อาสวาสฺส น วิชฺชนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Āsavāssa na vijjanti,
has no defilements by which
เยหิ มจฺจุวสํ วเชติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yehi maccuvasaṁ vaje”ti.
they might fall under the sway of Death.”
