said Venerable Bhadrāvudha,
โอกญฺชหํ ตณฺหจฺฉิทํ อเนชํ (อิจฺจายสฺมา ภทฺราวุโธ)
นนฺทิญฺชหํ โอฆติณฺณํ วิมุตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Nandiñjahaṁ oghatiṇṇaṁ vimuttaṁ;
“the delight-leaver, the flood-crosser, the freed,
กปฺปญฺชหํ อภิยาเจ สุเมธํ✎ ร่าง
Kappañjahaṁ abhiyāce sumedhaṁ,
the formulation-leaver, the intelligent.
สุตฺวาน นาคสฺส อปนมิสฺสนฺติ ๑- อิโต✎ ร่าง
Sutvāna nāgassa apanamissanti ito.
Different people have gathered from across the nations
นานาชนา ชนปเทหิ สงฺคตา✎ ร่าง
Nānājanā janapadehi saṅgatā,
wishing to hear your word, O hero.

ตว วีร วากฺยํ อภิกงฺขมานา✎ ร่าง
Tava vīra vākyaṁ abhikaṅkhamānā;
After hearing the spiritual giant they will depart from here.
เตสํ ตุวํ สาธุ วิยากโรหิ✎ ร่าง
Tesaṁ tuvaṁ sādhu viyākarohi,
Please, sage, answer them clearly,
ตถา หิ เต วิทิโต เอส ธมฺโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tathā hi te vidito esa dhammo”.
for truly you understand this matter.”
อาทานตณฺหํ วินเยถ สพฺพํ✎ ร่าง
“Ādānataṇhaṁ vinayetha sabbaṁ,
“Dispel all craving for attachments,”

(bhadrāvudhāti bhagavā
replied the Buddha,
อุทฺธํ อโธ ติริยญฺจาปิ มชฺเฌ✎ ร่าง
Uddhaṁ adho tiriyañcāpi majjhe;
“above, below, all round, between.
ยํ ยญฺหิ โลกสฺมึ อุปาทิยนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ yañhi lokasmimupādiyanti,
For whatever a personage grasps in the world,
เตเนว มาโร อเนฺวติ ชนฺตุํ✎ ร่าง
Teneva māro anveti jantuṁ.
Māra pursues them right there.
ตสฺมา ปชานํ น อุปาทิเยถ✎ ร่าง
Tasmā pajānaṁ na upādiyetha,
So let a mindful mendicant who understands
ภิกฺขุ สโต กิญฺจนํ สพฺพโลเก✎ ร่าง
Bhikkhu sato kiñcanaṁ sabbaloke;
not grasp anything in all the world,
อาทานสตฺเต อิติ เปกฺขมาโน✎ ร่าง
Ādānasatte iti pekkhamāno,
observing that, in clinging to attachments,
ปชํ อิมํ มจฺจุเธยฺยํ วิสตฺตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pajaṁ imaṁ maccudheyye visattan”ti.
these people cling to the domain of death.”
