said Venerable Udaya,
ฌายึ วิรชมาสินํ (อิจฺจายสฺมา อุทโย) กตกิจฺจํ อนาสวํ✎ ร่าง
Katakiccaṁ anāsavaṁ;
“who has completed the task, is free of defilements,
ปารคุํ สพฺพธมฺมานํ✎ ร่าง
Pāraguṁ sabbadhammānaṁ,
and has gone beyond all things,
อตฺถี ปเญฺหน อาคมํ✎ ร่าง
Atthi pañhena āgamaṁ;
I have come seeking with a question.
อญฺญํ วิโมกฺขํ ปพฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūhi,
Tell me the liberation by enlightenment,
อวิชฺชาย ปเภทนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Avijjāya pabhedanaṁ”.
the smashing of ignorance.”

“Pahānaṁ kāmacchandānaṁ,

replied the Buddha,
โทมนสฺสาน จูภยํ✎ ร่าง
Domanassāna cūbhayaṁ;
“sensual desires and displeasures;
ถีนสฺส จ ปนุทนํ✎ ร่าง
Thinassa ca panūdanaṁ,
the casting aside of dullness,
กุกฺกุจฺจานํ นิวารณํ✎ ร่าง
Kukkuccānaṁ nivāraṇaṁ.
and the prevention of remorse;
อุเปกฺขาสติสํสุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
Upekkhāsatisaṁsuddhaṁ,
pure equanimity and mindfulness,
ธมฺมตกฺกปุเรชวํ✎ ร่าง
dhammatakkapurejavaṁ;
preceded by investigation of principles—
อญฺญํ วิโมกฺขํ ๒- ปพฺรูมิ✎ ร่าง
Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūmi,
this, I declare, is liberation by enlightenment,
อวิชฺชาย ปเภทนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
avijjāya pabhedanaṁ”.

“Kiṁsu saṁyojano loko,
“What fetters the world?

is extinguishment spoken of?”

“Nandisaṁyojano loko,
“Delight fetters the world.

It travels about by means of thought.

นิพฺพานํ อิติ วุจฺจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
nibbānaṁ iti vuccati”.

กถํสตสฺส จรโต✎ ร่าง
“Kathaṁ satassa carato,
“For one living mindfully,
วิญฺญาณํ อุปรุชฺฌติ✎ ร่าง
viññāṇaṁ uparujjhati;
how does consciousness cease?
ภวนฺตํ ปุฏฺฐุมาคมฺม✎ ร่าง
Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,
We’ve come to ask you, worthy sir:
ตํ สุโฌม วโจ ตว ฯ✎ ร่าง
taṁ suṇoma vaco tava”.
let us hear what you say.”
อชฺฌตฺตญฺจ พหิทฺธา จ✎ ร่าง
“Ajjhattañca bahiddhā ca,
“Not taking pleasure in feeling
เวทนํ นาภินนฺทโต✎ ร่าง
Vedanaṁ nābhinandato;
internally and externally—
เอวํสตสฺส จรโต✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ satassa carato,
for one living mindfully,
วิญฺญาณํ อุปรุชฺฌตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Viññāṇaṁ uparujjhatī”ti.
that’s how consciousness ceases.”
