[๓๓๖] บุรุษผู้ประสงค์จะทำธุรกิจ เมื่อประกอบตนในกิจที่ไม่ควรประกอบ ถ้า เมื่อขืนประพฤติอยู่อย่างนั้น ก็ไม่พึงได้สำเร็จผล การประกอบในกิจที่ ไม่ควรประกอบนั้น มิใช่ลักษณะบุญ ถ้าบุคคลใด ไม่ถอนความเป็นอยู่ อย่างลำบากแล้วมาสละธรรมอันเอกเสีย บุคคลนั้นก็พึงเป็นดังคนกาลี ถ้าสละทิ้งคุณธรรมแม้ทั้งปวง ผู้นั้นก็พึงเป็นเหมือนคนตาบอด เพราะ ไม่เห็นธรรมที่สงบและธรรมไม่สงบ บุคคลพึงทำอย่างใด พึงพูดอย่าง นั้นแล ไม่พึงทำอย่างใด ไม่พึงพูดอย่างนั้น บัณฑิตทั้งหลายย่อม กำหนดรู้ว่า บุคคลผู้ไม่ทำ ดีแต่พูดนั้นมีมาก ดอกไม้งาม มีสีแต่ไม่มี กลิ่น ฉันใด วาจาอันเป็นสุภาษิต ย่อมไม่มีผลแก่บุคคลผู้ไม่ทำอยู่ ก็ฉันนั้น ดอกไม้งาม มีสี มีกลิ่น ฉันใด วาจาอันเป็นสุภาษิตย่อม มีผลแก่บุคคลผู้ทำอยู่ ฉะนั้น.

applies themselves where they ought not;

Carañce nādhigaccheyya,

not achieving what they worked for,

ตํ เว ๔- ทุพฺภคลกฺขณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง

‘taṁ me dubbhagalakkhaṇaṁ’.

they say: “That’s a sign of my bad luck.”

อพฺพูฬฺหํ อฆตชีวิตํ✎ ร่าง

Abbūḷhaṁ aghagataṁ vijitaṁ,

When a misfortune is extracted and beaten,

เอกญฺเจ โอสฺสชฺเชยฺย กลีว สิยา✎ ร่าง

Ekañce ossajeyya kalīva siyā;

to surrender it in part would be like losing at dice;

สพฺพานิปิ เจ โอสฺสชฺเชยฺย อนฺโธว สิยา✎ ร่าง

Sabbānipi ce ossajeyya andhova siyā,

but to surrender it all you’d have to be blind,

สมวิสมสฺส อทสฺสนโต ฯ✎ ร่าง

Samavisamassa adassanato.

not seeing the even and the uneven.

ยญฺหิ กยิรา ตญฺหิ วเท✎ ร่าง

Yañhi kayirā tañhi vade,

You should only say what you would do;

yaṁ na kayirā na taṁ vade;

you shouldn’t say what you wouldn’t do.

Akarontaṁ bhāsamānaṁ,

The wise will recognize

ปริชานนฺติ ปณฺฑิตา ฯ✎ ร่าง

parijānanti paṇḍitā.

one who talks without doing.

ยถาปิ รุจิรํ ปุปฺผํ✎ ร่าง

Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,

Just like a glorious flower

วณฺณวนฺตํ อคนฺธกํ✎ ร่าง

vaṇṇavantaṁ agandhakaṁ;

that’s colorful but lacks fragrance;

thag5.2:4.3 #

เอวํ สุภาสิตา วาจา✎ ร่าง

Evaṁ subhāsitā vācā,

well-spoken speech is fruitless

thag5.2:4.4 #

อผลา โหติ อกุพฺพโต ฯ✎ ร่าง

aphalā hoti akubbato.

for one who does not act on it.

ยถาปิ รุจิรํ ปุปฺผํ✎ ร่าง

Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,

Just like a glorious flower

วณฺณวนฺตํ สคนฺธกํ✎ ร่าง

Vaṇṇavantaṁ sugandhakaṁ;

that’s both colorful and fragrant,

Evaṁ subhāsitā vācā,

well-spoken speech is fruitful

for one who acts on it.
