Cūḷapanthaka
ทนฺธา มยฺหํ คตี อาสิ✎ ร่าง
“Dandhā mayhaṁ gatī āsi,
My progress was slow,
ปริภูโต ปุเร อหํ✎ ร่าง
paribhūto pure ahaṁ;
I was despised in the past.
ภาตา จ มํ ปณาเมสิ✎ ร่าง
Bhātā ca maṁ paṇāmesi,
Even my brother turned me away,
คจฺฉทานิ ตุวํ ฆรํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘gaccha dāni tuvaṁ gharaṁ’.
saying, “Go home now.”
โสหํ ปณามิโต สนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Sohaṁ paṇāmito santo,
Turned away at the gate
สงฺฆารามสฺส โกฏฺฐเก✎ ร่าง
saṅghārāmassa koṭṭhake;
of the Saṅgha’s monastery,
ทุมฺมโน ตตฺถ อฏฺฐาสึ✎ ร่าง
Dummano tattha aṭṭhāsiṁ,
I stood there sadly,
สาสนสฺมึ อเปกฺขวา ฯ✎ ร่าง
sāsanasmiṁ apekkhavā.
longing for the dispensation.
ภควา ตตฺถ อาคจฺฉิ✎ ร่าง
Bhagavā tattha āgacchi,
Then the Buddha came
สีสํ มยฺหํ ปรามสิ✎ ร่าง
sīsaṁ mayhaṁ parāmasi;
and touched my head.
พาหายํ มํ คเหตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Bāhāya maṁ gahetvāna,
Taking me by the arm,
สงฺฆารามํ ปเวสยิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
saṅghārāmaṁ pavesayi.
he brought me into the Saṅgha’s monastery.
อนุกมฺปาย เม สตฺถา✎ ร่าง
Anukampāya me satthā,
The Teacher, out of sympathy,
ปาทาสิ ปาทปุญฺฉนึ✎ ร่าง
pādāsi pādapuñchaniṁ;
gave me a foot-wiping cloth, saying:
เอตํ สุทฺธํ อธิฏฺเฐหิ✎ ร่าง
‘Etaṁ suddhaṁ adhiṭṭhehi,
“Focus your awareness
เอกมนฺตํ สฺวธิฏฺฐิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekamantaṁ svadhiṭṭhitaṁ’.
exclusively on this clean cloth.”
ตสฺสาหํ วจนํ สุตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,
After hearing his words,

วิหาสึ สาสเน รโต✎ ร่าง
vihāsiṁ sāsane rato;
I happily did his bidding.
สมาธึ ปฏิปาเทสึ✎ ร่าง
Samādhiṁ paṭipādesiṁ,
I practiced meditative immersion
อุตฺตมตฺถสฺส ปตฺติยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
uttamatthassa pattiyā.
for the attainment of the highest goal.
ปุพฺเพนิวาสํ ชานามิ✎ ร่าง
Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi,
I know my past lives,

ทิพฺพจกฺขุํ วิโสธิตํ✎ ร่าง
dibbacakkhu visodhitaṁ;
my clairvoyance is clarified;
ติสฺโส วิชฺชา อนุปฺปตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
I’ve attained the three knowledges,
กตํ พุทฺธสฺส สาสนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
สหสฺสกฺขตฺตุํ อตฺตานํ✎ ร่าง
Sahassakkhattumattānaṁ,
I, Panthaka, created a thousand

นิมฺมินิตฺวาน ปนฺถโก✎ ร่าง
nimminitvāna panthako;
images of myself,
นิสีทิ อมฺพวเน ๑- รมฺเม✎ ร่าง
Nisīdambavane ramme,
and sat in the delightful mango grove
ยาว กาลปฺปเวทนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yāva kālappavedanā.
until the time for the meal offering was announced.
ตโต เม สตฺถา ปาเหสิ✎ ร่าง
Tato me satthā pāhesi,
Then the teacher sent to me
ทูตํ กาลปฺปเวทกํ✎ ร่าง
dūtaṁ kālappavedakaṁ;
a messenger to announce the time.
ปเวทิตมฺหิ กาลมฺหิ✎ ร่าง
Paveditamhi kālamhi,
When the time was announced,
เวหาสานุปสงฺกมึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
vehāsādupasaṅkamiṁ.
I flew to him through the air.
วนฺทิตฺวา สตฺถุโน ปาเท✎ ร่าง
Vanditvā satthuno pāde,
I paid homage at the teacher’s feet,
เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทหํ✎ ร่าง
ekamantaṁ nisīdahaṁ;
and sat to one side.
นิสินฺนํ มํ วิทิตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Nisinnaṁ maṁ viditvāna,
When he knew I was seated,
อถ สตฺถา ปฏิคฺคหิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
atha satthā paṭiggahi.
the teacher received the offering.
อายาโค สพฺพโลกสฺส✎ ร่าง
Āyāgo sabbalokassa,
Recipient of gifts from the whole world,
อาหุตีนํ ปฏิคฺคโห✎ ร่าง
āhutīnaṁ paṭiggaho;
receiver of sacrifices,
ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ มนุสฺสานํ✎ ร่าง
Puññakkhettaṁ manussānaṁ,
field of merit for humanity,
ปฏิคฺคณฺหิตฺถ ทกฺขิณนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paṭiggaṇhittha dakkhiṇan”ti.
he received the religious donation.
