Chapter One
มนุสฺสภูตํ สมฺพุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
“Manussabhūtaṁ sambuddhaṁ,
Awakened as a human being,
อตฺตทนฺตํ สมาหิตํ✎ ร่าง
Attadantaṁ samāhitaṁ;
self-tamed and immersed in samādhi,
อิริยมานํ พฺรหฺมปเถ✎ ร่าง
Iriyamānaṁ brahmapathe,
following the spiritual path,
จิตฺตสฺสูปสเม รตํ✎ ร่าง
Cittassūpasame rataṁ.
he loves peace of mind.
ยํ มนุสฺสา นมสฺสนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ manussā namassanti,
Revered by people,
สพฺพธมฺมาน ปารคุํ✎ ร่าง
sabbadhammāna pāraguṁ;
gone beyond all things,
เทวาปิ นํ นมสฺสนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Devāpi taṁ namassanti,
even the gods revere him;
อิติ เม อรหโต สุตํ✎ ร่าง
iti me arahato sutaṁ.
so I’ve heard from the perfected one.
สพฺพสํโยชนาตีตํ✎ ร่าง
Sabbasaṁyojanātītaṁ,
He has transcended all fetters,

วนา นิพฺพานมาคตํ✎ ร่าง
vanā nibbanamāgataṁ;
and escaped from entanglements.
กาเมหิ เนกฺขมฺมรตํ✎ ร่าง
Kāmehi nekkhammarataṁ,
Delighting to renounce sensual pleasures,
มุตฺตํ เสลาว กญฺจนํ✎ ร่าง
muttaṁ selāva kañcanaṁ.
he’s freed like lustrous gold from stone.
ส เว อจฺจรุจิ ๒- นาโค✎ ร่าง
Sa ve accaruci nāgo,
That giant outshines all,

หิมวาวญฺเญ สิลุจฺจเย✎ ร่าง
himavāvaññe siluccaye;
like the Himalaya beside other mountains.
สพฺเพสํ นาคนามานํ✎ ร่าง
Sabbesaṁ nāganāmānaṁ,
Of all those named “giant”,
สจฺจนาโม อนุตฺตโร✎ ร่าง
saccanāmo anuttaro.
he is truly named, supreme.
นาคํ โว กิตฺตยิสฺสามิ✎ ร่าง
Nāgaṁ vo kittayissāmi,
I shall extol the giant for you,
น หิ อาคุํ กโรติ โส ฯ✎ ร่าง
na hi āguṁ karoti so;
for he does nothing monstrous.
โสรจฺจํ อวิหึสา จ✎ ร่าง
Soraccaṁ avihiṁsā ca,
gentleness and harmlessness
ปาทา นาคสฺส เต ทุเว ฯ✎ ร่าง
pādā nāgassa te duve.
are two feet of the giant.
สติ จ สมฺปชญฺญญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Sati ca sampajaññañca,
Mindfulness and awareness
จรณา นาคสฺส เต ๑- ปเร ฯ✎ ร่าง
caraṇā nāgassa tepare;
are his two other feet.
สทฺธาหตฺโถ มหานาโค✎ ร่าง
Saddhāhattho mahānāgo,
Faith is the giant’s trunk,
อุเปกฺขาเสตทนฺตวา ฯ✎ ร่าง
upekkhāsetadantavā.
and equanimity his white tusks.
สติ คีวา สิโร ปญฺญา✎ ร่าง
Sati gīvā siro paññā,
Mindfulness is his neck, his head is wisdom—
วีมํสา ธมฺมจินฺตนา✎ ร่าง
vīmaṁsā dhammacintanā;
investigation and thinking about principles.
ธมฺมกุจฺฉิสมาวาโส✎ ร่าง
Dhammakucchisamāvāso,
His belly is the sacred hearth of the Dhamma,
วิเวโก ตสฺส วาลธิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
viveko tassa vāladhi.
and his tail is seclusion.
โส ฌายี อสฺสาสรโต✎ ร่าง
So jhāyī assāsarato,
Practicing absorption, enjoying the breath,
อชฺฌตฺตํ สุสมาหิโต✎ ร่าง
ajjhattaṁ susamāhito;
he is serene within.
คจฺฉํ สมาหิโต นาโค✎ ร่าง
Gacchaṁ samāhito nāgo,
The giant is serene when walking,
ฐิโต นาโค สมาหิโต✎ ร่าง
ṭhito nāgo samāhito.
the giant is serene when standing,
สยํ สมาหิโต นาโค✎ ร่าง
Sayaṁ samāhito nāgo,
the giant is serene when lying down,
นิสินฺโนปิ สมาหิโต✎ ร่าง
nisinnopi samāhito;
and when sitting, the giant is serene.
สพฺพตฺถ สํวุโต นาโค✎ ร่าง
Sabbattha saṁvuto nāgo,
The giant is restrained everywhere:
เอสา นาคสฺส สมฺปทา ฯ✎ ร่าง
esā nāgassa sampadā.
this is the accomplishment of the giant.
ภุญฺชติ อนวชฺชานิ✎ ร่าง
Bhuñjati anavajjāni,
He eats blameless things,
สาวชฺชานิ น ภุญฺชติ✎ ร่าง
sāvajjāni na bhuñjati;
he doesn’t eat blameworthy things.
ฆาสํ อจฺฉาทนํ ลทฺธา✎ ร่าง
Ghāsamacchādanaṁ laddhā,
When he gets food and clothes,
สนฺนิธึ ปริวชฺชยํ✎ ร่าง
sannidhiṁ parivajjayaṁ.
he avoids storing them up.
สํโยชนํ อณุํ ถูลํ✎ ร่าง
Saṁyojanaṁ aṇuṁ thūlaṁ,
Having severed all bonds,

สพฺพํ เฉตฺวาน พนฺธนํ✎ ร่าง
sabbaṁ chetvāna bandhanaṁ;
fetters large and small,
เยน เยเนว คจฺฉติ✎ ร่าง
Yena yeneva gacchati,
wherever he goes,
อนเปกฺโขว คจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
anapekkhova gacchati.
he goes without concern.
ยถาปิ อุทเก ชาตํ✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi udake jātaṁ,
A white lotus,
ปุณฺฑรีกํ ปวฑฺฒติ✎ ร่าง
puṇḍarīkaṁ pavaḍḍhati;
fragrant and delightful,
โนปลิปฺปติ โตเยน✎ ร่าง
Nopalippati toyena,
sprouts in water and grows there,
สุจิคนฺธํ มโนรมํ✎ ร่าง
sucigandhaṁ manoramaṁ.
but the water doesn’t cling to it.
ตเถว จ โลเก ชาโต✎ ร่าง
Tatheva ca loke jāto,
Just so the Buddha is born in the world,
พุทฺโธ โลเก วิหรติ✎ ร่าง
buddho loke viharati;
and lives in the world,
โนปลิปฺปติ โลเกน✎ ร่าง
Nopalippati lokena,
but the world doesn’t stick to him,
โตเยน ปทุมํ ยถา ฯ✎ ร่าง
toyena padumaṁ yathā.
as water does not stick to the lotus.
มหาคฺคินิ ๓- ปชฺชลิโต✎ ร่าง
Mahāgini pajjalito,
A great blazing fire

อนาหาโรปสมฺมติ✎ ร่าง
anāhāropasammati;
dies down when the fuel runs out.
องฺคาเรสุ จ สนฺเตสุ✎ ร่าง
Aṅgāresu ca santesu,
And when the coals have gone out
นิพฺพุโตติ ปวุจฺจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
nibbutoti pavuccati.
it’s said to be “quenched”.
อตฺถสฺสายํ วิญฺญาปนี✎ ร่าง
Atthassāyaṁ viññāpanī,
This simile is taught by the discerning
อุปมา วิญฺญูหิ เทสิตา✎ ร่าง
upamā viññūhi desitā;
to express the meaning clearly.
วิญฺญิสฺสนฺติ มหานาคา✎ ร่าง
Viññissanti mahānāgā,
Great giants will understand
นาคํ นาเคน เทสิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
nāgaṁ nāgena desitaṁ.
what the giant taught the giant.
วีตราโค วีตโทโส✎ ร่าง
Vītarāgo vītadoso,
Free of greed, free of hate,
วีตโมโห อนาสโว✎ ร่าง
Vītamoho anāsavo;
free of delusion, undefiled;
สรีรํ วิชหํ นาโค✎ ร่าง
Sarīraṁ vijahaṁ nāgo,
the giant, giving up his body,
ปรินิพฺพิสฺสตฺยนาสโวติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Parinibbissatyanāsavo”ti.
undefiled, will be fully quenched.
