Ānanda
ปิสุเณน จ โกธเนน✎ ร่าง
“Pisuṇena ca kodhanena ca,
“The astute would not make friends
มจฺฉรินา จ วิภูตินนฺทินา✎ ร่าง
Maccharinā ca vibhūtanandinā;
with the slanderous or the hateful,
สขิตํ น กเรยฺย ปณฺฑิโต✎ ร่าง
Sakhitaṁ na kareyya paṇḍito,
with a miser or a gloater,
ปาโป กาปุริเสน สงฺคโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pāpo kāpurisena saṅgamo.
for it’s bad to consort with reprobates.
สทฺเธน จ เปสเลน จ✎ ร่าง
Saddhena ca pesalena ca,
The astute would make friends
ปญฺญวตา พหุสฺสุเตน จ✎ ร่าง
Paññavatā bahussutena ca;
with the faithful and the pleasant,
สขิตํ หิ กเรยฺย ปณฺฑิโต✎ ร่าง
Sakhitaṁ kareyya paṇḍito,
the wise and the learned,
ภทฺโท สปฺปุริเสหิ สงฺคโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bhaddo sappurisena saṅgamo.
for it’s a blessing to consort with true persons.”
ปสฺส จิตฺตกตํ พิมฺพํ อรุกายํ สมุสฺสิตํ
อาตุรํ พหุสงฺก✎ ร่าง
Passa cittakataṁ bimbaṁ,
“See this fancy puppet,

yassa natthi dhuvaṁ ṭhiti.
in which nothing lasts at all.

Bahussuto cittakathī,
“Gotama is learned, a brilliant speaker,
พุทฺธสฺส ปริจารโก✎ ร่าง
buddhassa paricārako;
the attendant to the Buddha.
ปนฺนภาโร วิสญฺญุตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Pannabhāro visaññutto,
With burden put down, detached,
เสยฺยํ กปฺเปติ โคตโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
seyyaṁ kappeti gotamo.
Gotama made his bed.
ขีณาสโว วิสญฺญุตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Khīṇāsavo visaññutto,
Defilements ended, detached,

saṅgātīto sunibbuto;
he has got over clinging and become quenched.
ธาเรติ อนฺติมํ เทหํ✎ ร่าง
Dhāreti antimaṁ dehaṁ,
He bears his final body,
ชาติมรณปารคู ฯ✎ ร่าง
jātimaraṇapāragū.
having gone beyond birth and death.”
ยสฺมึ ปติฏฺฐิตา ธมฺมา✎ ร่าง
Yasmiṁ patiṭṭhitā dhammā,
“Gotama stands firm

on the path that leads to quenching,

soyaṁ tiṭṭhati gotamo.
the Kinsman of the Sun, are grounded.”
ทฺวาสีติ พุทฺธโต คณฺหิ✎ ร่าง
Dvāsīti buddhato gaṇhiṁ,
“82,000 from the Buddha,

dve sahassāni bhikkhuto;
and 2,000 more from the monks:

84,000 teachings I’ve learned,
เย เม ธมฺมา ปวตฺติโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
ye me dhammā pavattino.
and these are what I promulgate.”
อปฺปสฺสุโตยํ ๒- ปุริโส✎ ร่าง
Appassutāyaṁ puriso,
“A person of little learning
พลิวทฺโทว ชีรติ✎ ร่าง
balibaddova jīrati;
ages like an ox—
มํสานิ ตสฺส วฑฺฒนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Maṁsāni tassa vaḍḍhanti,
their flesh grows,
ปญฺญา ตสฺส น วฑฺฒติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paññā tassa na vaḍḍhati.
but not their wisdom.
พหุสฺสุโต อปฺปสุตํ✎ ร่าง
Bahussuto appassutaṁ,
A learned person who, on account of their learning,
โย สุเตนาติมญฺญติ✎ ร่าง
yo sutenātimaññati;
looks down on someone of little learning,
อนฺโธ ปทีปธาโรว✎ ร่าง
Andho padīpadhārova,
strikes me as like
ตเถว ปฏิภาติ มํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tatheva paṭibhāti maṁ.
a blind man holding a lamp.
พหุสฺสุตํ อุปาเสยฺย✎ ร่าง
Bahussutaṁ upāseyya,
You should stay close to a learned person—
สุตญฺจ น วินาสเย✎ ร่าง
sutañca na vināsaye;
don’t lose what you’ve learned.
ตํ มูลํ พฺรหฺมจริยสฺส✎ ร่าง
Taṁ mūlaṁ brahmacariyassa,
It is the root of the spiritual life,
ตสฺมา ธมฺมธโร สิยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
tasmā dhammadharo siyā.
which is why you should memorize the teaching.
ปุพฺพาปรญฺญู อตฺถญฺญู✎ ร่าง
Pubbāparaññū atthaññū,
Knowing the sequence and meaning of the teaching,
นิรุตฺติปทโกวิโท✎ ร่าง
niruttipadakovido;
expert in the definition of terms,
สุคฺคหีตญฺจ คณฺหาติ✎ ร่าง
Suggahītañca gaṇhāti,
they make sure it is well memorized,
อตฺถญฺโจปปริกฺขติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
atthañcopaparikkhati.
and then examine the meaning.
ขนฺตฺยา ฉนฺทิกโต โหติ✎ ร่าง
Khantyā chandikato hoti,
Accepting the teachings, they become enthusiastic;

อุสฺสหิตฺวา ตุเลติ ตํ✎ ร่าง
ussahitvā tuleti taṁ;
making an effort, they weigh up the teaching.
สมเย โส ปทหติ✎ ร่าง
Samaye so padahati,
When it’s time, they strive
อชฺฌตฺตํ สุสมาหิโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
ajjhattaṁ susamāhito.
serene inside themselves.
พหุสฺสุตํ ธมฺมธรํ✎ ร่าง
Bahussutaṁ dhammadharaṁ,
If you want to understand the teaching,
สปฺปญฺญํ พุทฺธสาวกํ✎ ร่าง
sappaññaṁ buddhasāvakaṁ;
you should befriend that sort,
ธมฺมวิญฺญาณมากงฺขํ✎ ร่าง
Dhammaviññāṇamākaṅkhaṁ,
who are learned and have memorized the teachings,
ตํ ภเชถ ตถาวิธํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
taṁ bhajetha tathāvidhaṁ.
wise disciples of the Buddha.
พหุสฺสุโต ธมฺมธโร✎ ร่าง
Bahussuto dhammadharo,
One who is learned and has memorized the teaching,
โกสารกฺโข มเหสิโน✎ ร่าง
kosārakkho mahesino;
a keeper of the great seer’s treasury,
จกฺขุ สพฺพสฺส โลกสฺส✎ ร่าง
Cakkhu sabbassa lokassa,
is a visionary for the whole world,
ปูชเนยฺโย พหุสฺสุโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
pūjanīyo bahussuto.
learned and honorable.
ธมฺมาราโม ธมฺมรโต✎ ร่าง
Dhammārāmo dhammarato,
Delighting in the teaching, enjoying the teaching,
ธมฺมํ อนุวิจินฺตยํ✎ ร่าง
dhammaṁ anuvicintayaṁ;
contemplating the teaching,
ธมฺมํ อนุสฺสรํ ภิกฺขุ✎ ร่าง
Dhammaṁ anussaraṁ bhikkhu,
a mendicant who recollects the teaching
สทฺธมฺมา น ปริหายติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
saddhammā na parihāyati.
doesn’t fall away from the true teaching.”
กายมจฺเฉรครุโน✎ ร่าง
Kāyamaccheragaruno,
“When your body is pampered and heavy,
หิยฺยมาเน อนุฏฺฐเห✎ ร่าง
hiyyamāne anuṭṭhahe;
while your remaining time is running out,
สรีรสุขคิทฺธสฺส✎ ร่าง
Sarīrasukhagiddhassa,
greedy for physical pleasure,
กุโต สมณผาสุตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
kuto samaṇaphāsutā.
how can you be comfortable as an ascetic?”
น ปกฺขนฺติ ทิสา สพฺพา✎ ร่าง
Na pakkhanti disā sabbā,
“I’m completely disorientated!

ธมฺมา น ปฏิภนฺติ มํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
dhammā na paṭibhanti maṁ;
The teachings don’t spring to mind!
คเต กลฺยาณมิตฺตมฺหิ✎ ร่าง
Gate kalyāṇamittamhi,
With the passing of our good friend,
อนฺธการํว ขายติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
andhakāraṁva khāyati.
everything seems dark.
อพฺภตีตสหายสฺส✎ ร่าง
Abbhatītasahāyassa,
When your friend has passed away,
อตีตคตสตฺถุโน✎ ร่าง
atītagatasatthuno;
and your Teacher is past and gone,
นตฺถิ เอตาทิสํ มิตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Natthi etādisaṁ mittaṁ,
there’s no friend like
ยถา กายคตา สติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yathā kāyagatā sati.
mindfulness of the body.
เย ปุราณา อตีตา เต✎ ร่าง
Ye purāṇā atītā te,
The old have passed away,

นเวหิ น สเมติ เม✎ ร่าง
navehi na sameti me;
and I don’t agree with the new.
สฺวชฺช เอโกว ฌายามิ✎ ร่าง
Svajja ekova jhāyāmi,
Today I meditate alone
วสฺสุเปโตว ปกฺขิมา ฯ✎ ร่าง
vassupetova pakkhimā”.
like a bird snug in its nest.”
ทสฺสนาย อติกฺกนฺเต✎ ร่าง
“Dassanāya abhikkante,
“Many visitors from abroad
นานาเวรชฺชเก พหู✎ ร่าง
nānāverajjake bahū;
have come to visit.
มา วารยิตฺถ โสตาโร✎ ร่าง
Mā vārayittha sotāro,
Don’t block the audience,
ปสฺสนฺตุ สมโย มมํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
passantu samayo mamaṁ”.
let the congregation see me.”
ทสฺสนาย อติกฺกนฺเต✎ ร่าง
“Dassanāya abhikkante,
“Lots of visitors from abroad

nānāverajjake puthu;
have come to visit.
กโรติ สตฺถา โอกาสํ✎ ร่าง
Karoti satthā okāsaṁ,
The teacher grants them the opportunity,
น นิวาเรติ จกฺขุมา ฯ✎ ร่าง
na nivāreti cakkhumā.
the Clear-eyed One doesn’t turn them away.”
ปณฺณวีสติ วสฺสานิ✎ ร่าง
Paṇṇavīsativassāni,
“In the twenty five years that have passed
เสขภูตสฺส เม สโต✎ ร่าง
sekhabhūtassa me sato;
since I became a trainee,
น กามสญฺญา อุปฺปชฺชิ✎ ร่าง
Na kāmasaññā uppajji,
no sensual perception has arisen in me:
ปสฺส ธมฺมสุธมฺมตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
passa dhammasudhammataṁ.
behold the clear rightness of the teaching!
ปณฺณวีสติ วสฺสานิ✎ ร่าง
Paṇṇavīsativassāni,
In the twenty-five years
เสขภูตสฺส เม สโต✎ ร่าง
sekhabhūtassa me sato;
since I became a trainee,
น โทสสญฺญา อุปฺปชฺชิ✎ ร่าง
Na dosasaññā uppajji,
no malicious perception has arisen in me:
ปสฺส ธมฺมสุธมฺมตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
passa dhammasudhammataṁ.
behold the clear rightness of the teaching!”
ปณฺณวีสติ วสฺสานิ✎ ร่าง
Paṇṇavīsativassāni,
“For twenty-five years
ภควนฺตํ อุปฏฺฐหึ✎ ร่าง
bhagavantaṁ upaṭṭhahiṁ;
I attended on the Buddha
เมตฺเตน กายกมฺเมน✎ ร่าง
Mettena kāyakammena,
with loving deeds,
ฉายาว อนุปายินี ฯ✎ ร่าง
chāyāva anapāyinī.
like a shadow that never left.
ปณฺณวีสติ วสฺสานิ✎ ร่าง
Paṇṇavīsativassāni,
For 25 years
ภควนฺตํ อุปฏฺฐหึ✎ ร่าง
bhagavantaṁ upaṭṭhahiṁ;
I attended on the Buddha
เมตฺเตน วจีกมฺเมน✎ ร่าง
Mettena vacīkammena,
with loving words,
ฉายาว อนุปายินี ฯ✎ ร่าง
chāyāva anapāyinī.
like a shadow that never left.
ปณฺณวีสติ วสฺสานิ✎ ร่าง
Paṇṇavīsativassāni,
For 25 years
ภควนฺตํ อุปฏฺฐหึ✎ ร่าง
bhagavantaṁ upaṭṭhahiṁ;
I attended on the Buddha
เมตฺเตน มโนกมฺเมน✎ ร่าง
Mettena manokammena,
with loving thoughts,
ฉายาว อนุปายินี ฯ✎ ร่าง
chāyāva anapāyinī.
like a shadow that never left.
พุทฺธสฺส จงฺกมนฺตสฺส✎ ร่าง
Buddhassa caṅkamantassa,
While the Buddha was walking mindfully,

piṭṭhito anucaṅkamiṁ;
I walked behind him.
ธมฺเม เทสิยมานมฺหิ✎ ร่าง
Dhamme desiyamānamhi,
As he taught the Dhamma,
ญาณํ เม อุทปชฺชถ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ñāṇaṁ me udapajjatha.
knowledge arose in me.”
อหํ สกรณีโยมฺหิ✎ ร่าง
Ahaṁ sakaraṇīyomhi,
“I’m a trainee, who has more to do;
เสโข อปฺปตฺตมานโส✎ ร่าง
sekho appattamānaso;
my heart’s desire is still unfulfilled.
สตฺถุ จ ปรินิพฺพานํ✎ ร่าง
Satthu ca parinibbānaṁ,
Yet the Teacher, who was so compassionate to me,
โย อมฺหํ อนุกมฺปโก ฯ✎ ร่าง
yo amhaṁ anukampako.
has become completely quenched.
ตทาสิ ยํ ภึสนกํ✎ ร่าง
Tadāsi yaṁ bhiṁsanakaṁ,
Then there was terror!
ตทาสิ โลมหํสนํ✎ ร่าง
tadāsi lomahaṁsanaṁ;
Then they had goosebumps!
สพฺพาการวรูเปเต✎ ร่าง
Sabbākāravarūpete,
When the Buddha, endowed with all fine qualities,
สมฺพุทฺเธ ปรินิพฺพุเต ฯ✎ ร่าง
sambuddhe parinibbute”.
was fully quenched.”
พหุสฺสุโต ธมฺมธโร✎ ร่าง
“Bahussuto dhammadharo,
“Ānanda, who was learned and had memorized the teaching,
โกสารกฺโข มเหสิโน✎ ร่าง
kosārakkho mahesino;
a keeper of the great seer’s treasury,
จกฺขุ สพฺพสฺส โลกสฺส✎ ร่าง
Cakkhu sabbassa lokassa,
a visionary for the entire world,
อานนฺโท ปรินิพฺพุโต ฯ✎ ร่าง

has become fully quenched.

Bahussuto dhammadharo,
He was learned and had memorized the teaching,
โกสารกฺโข มเหสิโน✎ ร่าง
kosārakkho mahesino;
a keeper of the great seer’s treasury,
จกฺขุ สพฺพสฺส โลกสฺส✎ ร่าง
Cakkhu sabbassa lokassa,
a visionary for the entire world,
อนฺธกาเร ตโมนุโท ฯ✎ ร่าง
andhakāre tamonudo.
in thick of night he dispelled the dark.
คติมนฺโต สตีมนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Gatimanto satimanto,
He is the seer who remembered the teachings,

ธิติมนฺโต จ โย อิสิ✎ ร่าง
dhitimanto ca yo isi;
and mastered their sequence, holding them firm.
สทฺธมฺมาธารโก เถโร✎ ร่าง
Saddhammadhārako thero,
The senior monk who memorized the teaching,
อานนฺโท รตนากโร ฯ✎ ร่าง
ānando ratanākaro”.
Ānanda was a mine of gems.”
ปริจิณฺโณ มยา สตฺถา ฯเปฯ✎ ร่าง
“Pariciṇṇo mayā satthā,
“I’ve served the teacher
—
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ;
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
ภวเ✎ ร่าง
Ohito garuko bhāro,
The heavy burden is laid down,
นตฺติ สมูหตาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
natthi dāni punabbhavo”ti.
now there’ll be no more future lives.”
