Thirty Nuns
มุสลานิ คเหตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
“Musalāni gahetvāna,
“Taking a pestle,

ธญฺญํ โกฏฺเฏนฺติ มาณวา✎ ร่าง
dhaññaṁ koṭṭenti māṇavā;
young men pound grain.
ปุตฺตทารานิ โปเสนฺตา✎ ร่าง
Puttadārāni posentā,
Providing for partners and children,
ธนํ วินฺทนฺติ มาณวา ฯ✎ ร่าง
dhanaṁ vindanti māṇavā.
young men acquire wealth.
กโรถ พุทฺธสาสนํ✎ ร่าง
Karotha buddhasāsanaṁ,
Do the Buddha’s bidding,
ยํ กตฺวา นานุตปฺปติ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ katvā nānutappati;
you won’t regret it.
ขิปฺปํ ปาทานิ โธวิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Khippaṁ pādāni dhovitvā,
Having quickly washed your feet,
เอกมนฺเต นิสีทถ✎ ร่าง
ekamante nisīdatha;
sit in a discreet place to meditate.
เจโตสมถมนุยุตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Cetosamathamanuyuttā,
Devoted to serenity of heart,
กโรถ พุทฺธสาสนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
karotha buddhasāsanaṁ”.
do the Buddha’s bidding.”
ตสฺสา ตา วจนํ สุตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Tassā tā vacanaṁ sutvā,
After hearing her words,
ปฏาจาราย สาสนํ✎ ร่าง
paṭācārāya sāsanaṁ;
the instructions of Paṭācārā,
ปาเท ปกฺขาลยิตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Pāde pakkhālayitvāna,
they washed their feet
เอกมนฺตํ อุปาวิสุํ✎ ร่าง
ekamantaṁ upāvisuṁ;
and retired to a discreet place.
เจโตสมถมนุยุตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Cetosamathamanuyuttā,
Devoted to serenity of heart,
อกํสุ พุทฺธสาสนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
akaṁsu buddhasāsanaṁ.
they did the Buddha’s bidding.
รตฺติยา ปุริเม ยาเม✎ ร่าง
Rattiyā purime yāme,
In the first watch of the night,
ปุพฺพชาติมนุสฺสรุํ✎ ร่าง
pubbajātimanussaruṁ;
they recollected their past lives.
รตฺติยา มชฺฌิเม ยาเม✎ ร่าง
Rattiyā majjhime yāme,
In the middle watch of the night,
ทิพฺพจกฺขุํ วิโสธยุํ✎ ร่าง
dibbacakkhuṁ visodhayuṁ;
they purified their clairvoyance.
รตฺติยา ปจฺฉิเม ยาเม✎ ร่าง
Rattiyā pacchime yāme,
In the last watch of the night,
ตโมกฺขนฺธํ ปทาลยุํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tamokhandhaṁ padālayuṁ.
they shattered the mass of darkness.
อุฏฺฐาย ปาเท วนฺทึสุ✎ ร่าง
Uṭṭhāya pāde vandiṁsu,
They rose and paid homage at her feet:

กตา เต อนุสาสนี✎ ร่าง
“katā te anusāsanī;
“We have done your bidding;
อินฺทํว เทวา ติทสา✎ ร่าง
Indaṁva devā tidasā,
we shall abide honoring you,
สงฺคาเม อปราชิตํ✎ ร่าง
saṅgāme aparājitaṁ;
as the Thirty gods honor Indra,
ปุรกฺขิตฺวา วิหริสฺสาม✎ ร่าง
Purakkhatvā vihassāma,
undefeated in battle.
เตวิชฺชมฺหา อนาสวา ฯ✎ ร่าง
tevijjāmha anāsavā”ti.
Masters of the three knowledges, we are free of defilements.”
อิตฺถํ สุทํ ตึสมตฺตา เถรี ภิกฺขุนิโย ปฏาจาราย สนฺติเก
อญฺญํ พฺยากรึสุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Itthaṁ sudaṁ tiṁsamattā therī bhikkhuniyo paṭācārāya santike aññaṁ byākariṁsūti.
That is how thirty senior nuns declared their enlightenment in the presence of Paṭācārā.
