ลฏฺฐิหตฺโถ ปุเร อาสึ✎ ร่าง
“Laṭṭhihattho pure āsi,
“Once I carried a hermit’s staff,
โส ทานิ มิคลุทฺทโก✎ ร่าง
so dāni migaluddako;
but these days I hunt deer.
อาสาย ปลิปา โฆรา✎ ร่าง
Āsāya palipā ghorā,
My desires have made me unable to cross
นาสกฺขึ ปารเมตเส ๒- ฯ✎ ร่าง
nāsakkhi pārametave.
from the awful marsh to the far shore.
สุมตฺตํ มํ มญฺญมานา✎ ร่าง
Sumattaṁ maṁ maññamānā,
Thinking me so in love with her,
จาปา ปุตฺตมโตสยิ✎ ร่าง
cāpā puttamatosayi;
Cāpā kept our son happy.
จาปาย พนฺธนํ เฉตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Cāpāya bandhanaṁ chetvā,
Having cut Cāpā’s bond,
ปพฺพชิสฺสํ ปุเร ๓- อหํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
pabbajissaṁ punopahaṁ”.
I’ll go forth once again.”
มา เม กุชฺฌ มหาวีร✎ ร่าง
“Mā me kujjhi mahāvīra,
“Don’t be mad at me, great hero!

มา เม กุชฺฌ มหามุนิ✎ ร่าง
mā me kujjhi mahāmuni;
Don’t be mad at me, great sage!
น หิ โกธปเรตสฺส✎ ร่าง

If you’re mired in anger you can’t stay pure,
สุทฺธิ อตฺถิ กุโต ตโป ฯ✎ ร่าง
suddhi atthi kuto tapo”.
let alone be fervent.”
ปกฺกมิสฺสญฺจ นาลาโต✎ ร่าง
“Pakkamissañca nāḷāto,
“I’m going to leave Nālā!

kodha nāḷāya vacchati;
For who’d stay here at Nālā!
พนฺธนฺตี อิตฺถิรูเปน✎ ร่าง
Bandhantī itthirūpena,
With their figures, the women trap
สมเณ ธมฺมชีวิโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
samaṇe dhammajīvino”.

เอหิ กาฬ นิวตฺตสฺสุ✎ ร่าง
“Ehi kāḷa nivattassu,
“Please, Kāḷa, come back to me.

bhuñja kāme yathā pure;
Enjoy pleasures like you did before.
อหํ จ เต วสีกตา✎ ร่าง

เย จ เม สนฺติ ญาตกา ฯ✎ ร่าง
ye ca me santi ñātakā”.
along with any relatives I have.”
เอตฺโต เจว จตุพฺภาคํ✎ ร่าง
“Etto cāpe catubbhāgaṁ,
“Cāpā, if even a quarter
ยถา ภาสสิ ตํ จาเป✎ ร่าง
yathā bhāsasi tvañca me;
of what you say were true,
ตยิ รตฺตสฺส โปสสฺส✎ ร่าง
Tayi rattassa posassa,
it would be a splendid thing
อุฬารํ วต ตํ สิยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
uḷāraṁ vata taṁ siyā”.
for a man in love with you!”
กาฬงฺคินึว ตกฺการึ✎ ร่าง
“Kāḷaṅginiṁva takkāriṁ,
“Kāḷa, I am like a sprouting iris
ปุปฺผิตํ คิริมุทฺธนิ✎ ร่าง
pupphitaṁ girimuddhani;
flowering on a mountain top,
ผุลฺลํ ทาลิมลฏฺฐึว✎ ร่าง
Phullaṁ dālimalaṭṭhiṁva,
like a blossoming pomegranate,
อนฺโตทีเปว ปาฏลึ✎ ร่าง
antodīpeva pāṭaliṁ.
like a patala tree on an isle;
หริจนฺทนลิตฺตงฺคึ✎ ร่าง
Haricandanalittaṅgiṁ,
my limbs are anointed with yellow sandalwood,

กาสิกุตฺตมธารินึ✎ ร่าง
kāsikuttamadhāriniṁ;
and I wear the finest Kāsi cloth:
ตํ มํ รูปวตึ สนฺตึ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ maṁ rūpavatiṁ santiṁ,
when I am so very beautiful,
กสฺส โอหาย คจฺฉสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kassa ohāya gacchasi”.
how can you abandon me and leave?”
สากุณิโกว สกุณํ✎ ร่าง
“Sākuntikova sakuṇiṁ,
“You’re like a fowler
ยถา พนฺธิตุมิจฺฉติ✎ ร่าง
yathā bandhitumicchati;
who wants to catch a bird;
อาหริเมน รูเปน✎ ร่าง
Āharimena rūpena,
but you won’t trap me
น มํ ตฺวํ พาธยิสฺสสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
na maṁ tvaṁ bādhayissasi”.
with your costumed form.”
อิมญฺจ เม ปุตฺตผลํ✎ ร่าง
“Imañca me puttaphalaṁ,
“But this child, my fruit,
กาฬ อุปฺปาทิตํ ตยา✎ ร่าง
kāḷa uppāditaṁ tayā;
was begotten by you, Kāḷa.
ตํ มํ ปุตฺตวตึ สนฺตึ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ maṁ puttavatiṁ santiṁ,
When I have this child,
กสฺส โอหาย คจฺฉสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kassa ohāya gacchasi”.
how can you abandon me and leave?”
ชหนฺติ ปุตฺเต สปฺปญฺญา✎ ร่าง
“Jahanti putte sappaññā,
“The wise give up
ตโต ญาตี ตโต ธนํ✎ ร่าง
tato ñātī tato dhanaṁ;
children, family, and wealth.
ปพฺพชนฺติ มหาวีรา✎ ร่าง
Pabbajanti mahāvīrā,
Great heroes go forth
นาโค เฉตฺวาว พนฺธนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
nāgo chetvāva bandhanaṁ”.
like elephants breaking their bonds.”
อิทานิ เต อิมํ ปุตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
“Idāni te imaṁ puttaṁ,
“Now, this son of yours:
ทณฺเฑน ฉุริกาย วา✎ ร่าง
Daṇḍena churikāya vā;
I’ll strike him to the ground right here,
ภูมิยํ ว นิสุมฺเภยฺยํ✎ ร่าง
Bhūmiyaṁ vā nisumbhissaṁ,
with a stick or with a knife!
ปุตฺตโสกา น คจฺฉสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Puttasokā na gacchasi”.
Grieving your son, you will not leave.”
สเจ ปุตฺตํปิ สิคาลานํ✎ ร่าง
“Sace puttaṁ siṅgālānaṁ,
“Even if you feed our son
กุกฺกุรานํ ปทาหิสิ✎ ร่าง
kukkurānaṁ padāhisi;
to jackals and dogs,
น มํ ปุตฺตกเต ชมฺมิ✎ ร่าง
Na maṁ puttakatte jammi,
I’d never return again, you bitch,
ปุนราวตฺตยิสฺสสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
punarāvattayissasi”.
not even for the child’s sake.”
หนฺท โข ทานิ ภทนฺเต✎ ร่าง
“Handa kho dāni bhaddante,
“Well then, sir, tell me,

กุหึ กาฬ คมิสฺสสิ✎ ร่าง
kuhiṁ kāḷa gamissasi;
where will you go, Kāḷa?
กตมํ คามํ นิคมํ✎ ร่าง
Katamaṁ gāmanigamaṁ,
To what village or town,
นครํ ราชธานิโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
nagaraṁ rājadhāniyo”.
city or capital?”
อหุมฺห ปุพฺเพ คณิโน✎ ร่าง
“Ahumha pubbe gaṇino,
“Last time we had followers,
อสมณา สมณมานิโน✎ ร่าง
Assamaṇā samaṇamānino;
we weren’t ascetics, we just thought we were.
คาเมน คามํ วิจริมฺห✎ ร่าง
Gāmena gāmaṁ vicarimha,
We wandered from village to village,
นคเร ราชธานิโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Nagare rājadhāniyo.
to cities and capitals.
เอโส หิ ภควา พุทฺโธ✎ ร่าง
Eso hi bhagavā buddho,
But now the Blessed One, the Buddha,
นทึ เนรญฺชรํ ปติ✎ ร่าง
nadiṁ nerañjaraṁ pati;
back on the bank of the Nerañjara River,
สพฺพทุกฺขปฺปหานาย✎ ร่าง
Sabbadukkhappahānāya,
teaches the Dhamma so that living creatures
ธมฺมํ เทเสสิ ปาณินํ✎ ร่าง
dhammaṁ deseti pāṇinaṁ;
may abandon all suffering.
ตสฺสาหํ สนฺติเก ๓- คจฺฉํ✎ ร่าง
Tassāhaṁ santikaṁ gacchaṁ,
I shall go to his presence,
โส เม สตฺถา ภวิสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
so me satthā bhavissati”.
he shall be my Teacher.”
วนฺทนํ ทานิ วชฺชาสิ✎ ร่าง
“Vandanaṁ dāni vajjāsi,
“Now please convey my respects

โลกนาถํ อนุตฺตรํ✎ ร่าง
lokanāthaṁ anuttaraṁ;
to the supreme protector of the world.

Padakkhiṇañca katvāna,
Circling him to your right,
อาทิเสยฺยาสิ ทกฺขิณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ādiseyyāsi dakkhiṇaṁ”.
dedicate my religious donation.”
เอตํ โข ลพฺภมเมฺหหิ✎ ร่าง
“Etaṁ kho labbhamamhehi,
“This is the proper thing to do,
ยถา ภาสสิ ตํ จาเป✎ ร่าง
yathā bhāsasi tvañca me;
just as you have said to me.
วนฺทนํ ทานิ เต วชฺชํ✎ ร่าง
Vandanaṁ dāni te vajjaṁ,
I’ll convey your respects
โลกนาถํ อนุตฺตรํ✎ ร่าง
lokanāthaṁ anuttaraṁ;
to the supreme protector of the world.
ปทกฺขิณญฺจ กตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Padakkhiṇañca katvāna,
Circling him to my right,
อาทิสิสฺสามิ ทกฺขิณํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ādisissāmi dakkhiṇaṁ”.
I’ll dedicate your religious donation.”
ตโต จ กาโฬ ปกฺกามิ✎ ร่าง
Tato ca kāḷo pakkāmi,
Then Kāḷa set out

นทึ เนรญฺชรํ ปติ✎ ร่าง
nadiṁ nerañjaraṁ pati;
back to the bank of the Nerañjara River.
โส อทฺทสาสิ สมฺพุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
So addasāsi sambuddhaṁ,
He saw the Awakened One
เทเสนฺตํ อมตํปทํ✎ ร่าง
desentaṁ amataṁ padaṁ.
teaching the state free of death:
ทุกฺขํ ทุกฺขสมุปฺปาทํ✎ ร่าง
Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,
suffering, suffering’s origin,
ทุกฺขสฺส จ อติกฺกมํ✎ ร่าง
dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;
suffering’s transcendence,
อริยฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ✎ ร่าง
Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,
and the noble eightfold path
ทุกฺขูปสมคามินํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
that leads to the stilling of suffering.
ตสฺส ปาทานิ วนฺทิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Tassa pādāni vanditvā,
He paid homage at his feet,
กตฺวาน นํ ปทกฺขิณํ✎ ร่าง
Katvāna naṁ padakkhiṇaṁ;
circling him to his right,
จาปาย อาทิสิตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Cāpāya ādisitvāna,
and conveyed Cāpā’s dedication;
ปพฺพชิ อนคาริยํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ;
then he went forth to homelessness.
ติสฺโส วิชฺชา อนุปฺปตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
He attained the three knowledges,
กตํ พุทฺธสฺส สาสนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
