Pāṭaliputtamhi pathaviyā maṇḍe;
the city named for a flower,
สกฺยกุลกุลีนาโย✎ ร่าง
Sakyakulakulīnāyo,
there were two nuns from the Sakyan clan,
เทฺว ภิกฺขุนิโย คุณวติโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dve bhikkhuniyo hi guṇavatiyo.
both of them ladies of quality.
อิสิทาสี ตตฺถ เอกา✎ ร่าง
Isidāsī tattha ekā,
One was named Isidāsī, the second Bodhī.

Dutiyā bodhīti sīlasampannā ca;
They both were accomplished in ethics,
ฌานชฺฌายนรตาโย✎ ร่าง
Jhānajjhāyanaratāyo,
lovers of meditation and chanting,
พหุสฺสุตาโย ธุตกิเลสาโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bahussutāyo dhutakilesāyo.
learned, crushing corruptions.
ตา ปิณฺฑาย จริตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Tā piṇḍāya caritvā,
They wandered for alms and had their meal.

Bhattatthaṁ kariya dhotapattāyo;
When they had washed their bowls,

Rahitamhi sukhanisinnā,
they sat happily in a private place
อิมา คิรา อพฺภวเทสุํ ๒- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Imā girā abbhudīresuṁ.
and started a conversation.
ปาสาทิกาสิ อยฺเย✎ ร่าง
“Pāsādikāsi ayye,
“You’re so lovely, Mistress Isidāsī,
อิสิทาสิ วโยปิ เต อปริหีโน✎ ร่าง
Isidāsi vayopi te aparihīno;
your youth has not yet faded.
กึ ทิสฺวาน วลิกํ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ disvāna byālikaṁ,
What problem did you see that made you
อถาสิ เนกฺขมฺมมนุยุตฺตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Athāsi nekkhammamanuyuttā”.
dedicate your life to renunciation?”
เอวมนุยุญฺชิยมานา สา✎ ร่าง
Evamanuyuñjiyamānā sā,
Being pressed like this in private,
รหิเต ธมฺมเทสนากุสลา✎ ร่าง
Rahite dhammadesanākusalā;
Isidāsī, skilled in teaching Dhamma,
อิสิทาสี อิทํ วจนมพฺรวิ✎ ร่าง
Isidāsī vacanamabravi,
voiced the following words.
สุณ โพธิ ยถามฺหิ ปพฺพชิตา ฯ
อิโต ปรํ วิสชฺชนกถา✎ ร่าง
“Suṇa bodhi yathāmhi pabbajitā”.
“Bodhī, hear how I went forth.
อุชฺเชนิยา ปุรวเร✎ ร่าง
“Ujjeniyā puravare,
In the fine town of Ujjenī,
มยฺหํ ปิตา สีลสํวุโต เสฏฺฐี✎ ร่าง
Mayhaṁ pitā sīlasaṁvuto seṭṭhi;
my father was a financier, a good and moral man.
ตสฺสมฺหิ เอกา ธีตา✎ ร่าง
Tassamhi ekadhītā,
I was his only daughter,
ปิยา มนาปา ทยิตา จ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Piyā manāpā ca dayitā ca.
dear, beloved, and cherished.
อถ เม สาเกตโต วรโก✎ ร่าง
Atha me sāketato varakā,
Then some suitors came for me
อาคจฺฉิ อุตฺตมกุลีโน✎ ร่าง
Āgacchumuttamakulīnā;
from the top family of Sāketa.
เสฏฺฐี ปหูตรตโน✎ ร่าง
Seṭṭhī pahūtaratano,
They were sent by a financier abounding in wealth,
ตสฺส มํ สุณฺหํ อทาสิ ตาโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tassa mamaṁ suṇhamadāsi tāto.
to whom my father then gave me as daughter-in-law.
สสฺสุยา สสฺสุรสฺส จ✎ ร่าง
Sassuyā sasurassa ca,
Come morning and come evening,
สายํ ปาตํ ปณามมุปคมฺม✎ ร่าง
Sāyaṁ pātaṁ paṇāmamupagamma;
I bowed with my head to the feet
สิรสา กโรมิ ปาเท✎ ร่าง
Sirasā karomi pāde,
of my father and mother-in-law,
วนฺทามิ ยถามฺหิ อนุสิฏฺฐา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vandāmi yathāmhi anusiṭṭhā.
just as I had been told.
ยา มยฺหํ สามิกสฺส✎ ร่าง
Yā mayhaṁ sāmikassa,
Whenever I saw my husband’s sisters,

Bhaginiyo bhātuno parijano vā;
his brothers, his servants,

or even he, my one and only,
อุพฺพิคฺคา อาสนํ เทมิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ubbiggā āsanaṁ demi.
I nervously gave them a seat.
อนฺเนน จ ปาเนน จ✎ ร่าง
Annena ca pānena ca,
Whatever they wanted—food and drink,

Khajjena ca yañca tattha sannihitaṁ;
treats, or whatever was in the cupboard—

Chādemi upanayāmi ca,
I brought out and offered to them,
เทมิ ยํ ยสฺส ปฏิรูปํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Demi ca yaṁ yassa patirūpaṁ.
ensuring each got what was fitting.
กาเลน อุฏฺฐหิตฺวา ๒- ปติ✎ ร่าง
Kālena upaṭṭhahitvā,
Having risen bright and early,
ฆรํ สมุปคมึ
อุมฺมาร✎ ร่าง
Gharaṁ samupagamāmi ummāre;
I approached the main house,
โธตหตฺถปาทา✎ ร่าง
Dhovantī hatthapāde,
washed my hands and feet,
ปญฺชลิกา สามิกมุเปมิหํ ๓- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pañjalikā sāmikamupemi.
and went to my husband with cupped palms.
โกจฺฉํ ปสาทํ อญฺชนญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Kocchaṁ pasādaṁ añjaniñca,
Taking a comb, adornments,

eyeshadow, and a mirror,

Parikammakārikā viya,
I myself did the makeup for my husband,
สยเมว ปตึ วิภูเสมิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sayameva patiṁ vibhūsemi.
as if I were his beautician.
สยเมว โอทนํ สาธยามิ✎ ร่าง
Sayameva odanaṁ sādhayāmi,
I myself cooked the rice;
สยเมว ภาชนํ โธวึ✎ ร่าง
Sayameva bhājanaṁ dhovantī;
I myself washed the pots.
มาตาว เอกปุตฺตกํ✎ ร่าง
Mātāva ekaputtakaṁ,
I looked after my husband
ตถา ภตฺตารํ ปริจรามิ✎ ร่าง
Tathā bhattāraṁ paricarāmi.
like a mother her only child.
เอวํ มํ ภตฺติกตํ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ maṁ bhattikataṁ,
Thus I showed my devotion to him,
อนุตฺตรํ การิกํ ตํ นิหตมานํ✎ ร่าง
Anurattaṁ kārikaṁ nihatamānaṁ;
a loyal, virtuous, and humble servant,
อุฏฺฐายิกํ อนลสํ✎ ร่าง
Uṭṭhāyikaṁ analasaṁ,
getting up early, and working tirelessly:
สีลวตึ ทุสฺสเต ภตฺตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sīlavatiṁ dussate bhattā.
yet still my husband did me wrong.
โส มาตรญฺจ ปิตรญฺจ✎ ร่าง
So mātarañca pitarañca,
He said to his mother and father:
ภณติ อาปุจฺฉาหํ คมิสฺสามิ✎ ร่าง
Bhaṇati ‘āpucchahaṁ gamissāmi;
‘I’ll take my leave and go,
อิสิทาสิยา น สห วจฺฉํ✎ ร่าง
Isidāsiyā na saha vacchaṁ,
I can’t stand to live together with Isidāsī
เอกาคาเรหํ สห วตฺถุํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ekāgārehaṁ saha vatthuṁ’.
staying in the same house.’
มา เอวํ ปุตฺต อวจ✎ ร่าง
‘Mā evaṁ putta avaca,
‘Son, don’t speak like this!
อิสิทาสี ปณฺฑิตา ปริพฺยตฺตาย✎ ร่าง
Isidāsī paṇḍitā paribyattā;
Isidāsī is astute and competent,
อุฏฺฐายิกา อนลสา✎ ร่าง
Uṭṭhāyikā analasā,
she gets up early and works tirelessly,
กึ ตุยฺหํ น โรจเต ปุตฺต ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ tuyhaṁ na rocate putta’.
son, why doesn’t she please you?’
น จ เม หึสติ กิญฺจิ✎ ร่าง
‘Na ca me hiṁsati kiñci,
‘She hasn’t done anything to hurt me,

น จาหํ อิสิทาสิยา สห วจฺฉํ✎ ร่าง
Na cahaṁ isidāsiyā saha vacchaṁ;
but I just can’t stand to live with her.
เทสฺสาว เม อลํ เม✎ ร่าง
Dessāva me alaṁ me,
As far as I’m concerned, she’s just detestable.
อาปุจฺฉาหํ คมิสฺสามิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Apucchāhaṁ gamissāmi’.
I’ve had enough, I’ll take my leave and go.’
ตสฺส วจนํ สุณิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Tassa vacanaṁ suṇitvā,
When they heard his words,
สสฺสู สสฺสุโร จ มํ อปุจฺฉึสุ✎ ร่าง
Sassu sasuro ca maṁ apucchiṁsu;
my father-in-law and mother-in-law asked me:
กิสฺส ตยา อปรทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
‘Kissa tayā aparaddhaṁ,
‘What did you do wrong?
ภณ กตํ วิสฺสฏฺฐา ยถาภูตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bhaṇa vissaṭṭhā yathābhūtaṁ’.
Boldly tell how it occurred.’
นปิหํ อปรชฺฌํ กิญฺจิ✎ ร่าง
‘Napihaṁ aparajjhaṁ kiñci,
‘I’ve done nothing wrong,

Napi hiṁsemi na bhaṇāmi dubbacanaṁ;
I haven’t hurt him, or said anything bad.

Kiṁ sakkā kātuyye,
What can I possibly do,
ยํ มํ วิเทสฺสเต ภตฺตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ maṁ viddessate bhattā’.
when my husband finds me so hateful?’
เต มํ ปิตุ ฆรํ ปฏิ นยึสุ✎ ร่าง
Te maṁ pitugharaṁ paṭinayiṁsu,
They led me back to my father’s home,

Vimanā dukhena adhibhūtā;
distraught, overcome with suffering, and said:
ปุตฺตมนุรกฺขมานา✎ ร่าง
Puttamanurakkhamānā,
‘By caring for our son,
ชินามฺหเส รูปินึ ลจฺฉึ ๒- ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Jitāmhase rūpiniṁ lakkhiṁ’.
we’ve lost her, so lovely and lucky!’
อถ มํ อทาสิ ตาโต✎ ร่าง
Atha maṁ adāsi tāto,
Next my dad gave me to the household
อฑฺฒสฺส ฆรมฺหิ ทุติยกุลิกสฺส✎ ร่าง
Aḍḍhassa gharamhi dutiyakulikassa;
of a second wealthy family-man.
ตโต อุปฑฺฒสุงฺเกน✎ ร่าง
Tato upaḍḍhasuṅkena,
For this he got half the bride-price
เยน มํ วินฺทถ เสฏฺฐิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yena maṁ vindatha seṭṭhi.
of that which the financier paid.
ตสฺสปิ ฆรมฺหิ มาสํ✎ ร่าง
Tassapi gharamhi māsaṁ,
In his house I also lived a month,

Avasiṁ atha sopi maṁ paṭiccharayi;
before he too wanted me gone;

though I served him like a slave,
อทูสิกํ สีลสมฺปนฺนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Adūsikaṁ sīlasampannaṁ.
virtuous and doing no wrong.
ภิกฺขาย จ วิจรนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Bhikkhāya ca vicarantaṁ,
My father then spoke to a beggar for alms,
ทมกํ ทนฺตํ เม ปิตา ภณติ✎ ร่าง
Damakaṁ dantaṁ me pitā bhaṇati;
a tamer of others and of himself:
โส ๔- สิหิ เม ชามาตา✎ ร่าง
‘Hohisi me jāmātā,
‘Be my son-in-law;
นิกฺขิป โปนฺติญฺจ ฆฏิกญฺจ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Nikkhipa poṭṭhiñca ghaṭikañca’.
set aside your tonsure-cloth and pot.’
โสปิ วสิตฺวา ปกฺขํ✎ ร่าง
Sopi vasitvā pakkhaṁ,
He stayed a fortnight before he said to my dad:
อถ ตาตํ ภณติ เทหิ เม
โปนฺตึ✎ ร่าง
Atha tātaṁ bhaṇati ‘dehi me poṭṭhiṁ;
‘Give me back my tonsure-cloth,
ฆฏิกญฺจ กปลฺลกญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Ghaṭikañca mallakañca,
my pot and my mug—
ปุนปิ ภิกฺขํ จริสฺสามิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Punapi bhikkhaṁ carissāmi’.
I’ll wander begging again.’
อถ นํ ภณติ ตาโต✎ ร่าง
Atha naṁ bhaṇatī tāto,
So then my mum and my dad
อมฺมา สพฺโพ จ เม ญาติคณวคฺโค✎ ร่าง
Ammā sabbo ca me ñātigaṇavaggo;
and my whole group of relatives said:
กินฺเต น กิรติ อิธ✎ ร่าง
‘Kiṁ te na kīrati idha,
‘What has not been done for you here?
ภณ ขิปฺปํ ยนฺเต กริหิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bhaṇa khippaṁ taṁ te karihi’ti.
Quickly, tell us what we can do for you!’
เอวํ ภณิโต ภณติ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ bhaṇito bhaṇati,
When they spoke to him like this he said,
ยทิ เม อตฺตา สกฺโกติ อลํ มยฺหํ✎ ร่าง
‘Yadi me attā sakkoti alaṁ mayhaṁ;
‘If I can make do for myself, that is enough.
อิสิทาสิยา น สห วจฺฉํ✎ ร่าง
Isidāsiyā na saha vacchaṁ,
I can’t stand to live together with Isidāsī
เอกฆเรหํ สห วตฺถุํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ekagharehaṁ saha vatthuṁ’.
staying in the same house.’
วิสฺสชฺชิโต คโต โส✎ ร่าง
Vissajjito gato so,
Released, he left.
อหํปิ เอกากินี วิจินฺเตมิ✎ ร่าง
Ahampi ekākinī vicintemi;
But I sat all alone contemplating:
อาปุจฺฉิตฺวาน คจฺฉามิ✎ ร่าง
‘Āpucchitūna gacchaṁ,
‘Having taken my leave, I’ll go,
มริตุํ วา ปพฺพชิตุํ ๖- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Marituye vā pabbajissaṁ vā’.
either to die or to go forth.’
อถ อยฺยา ชินทตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Atha ayyā jinadattā,
But then Mistress Jinadattā,

อาคจฺฉิ โคจราย จรมานา✎ ร่าง
Āgacchī gocarāya caramānā;
learned and virtuous,
ตาตกุลํ วินยธรี✎ ร่าง
Tātakulaṁ vinayadharī,
who had memorized the monastic law,
พหุสฺสุตา สีลสมฺปนฺนา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bahussutā sīlasampannā.
came resorting to my dad’s house for alms.
ตํ ทิสฺวาน อมฺหากํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ disvāna amhākaṁ,
When I saw her,
อุฏฺฐายาสนํ ตสฺสา ปญฺญาปยึ✎ ร่าง
Uṭṭhāyāsanaṁ tassā paññāpayiṁ;
I rose from my seat and prepared it for her.
นิสินฺนาย จ ปาเท✎ ร่าง
Nisinnāya ca pāde,
When she had taken her seat,
วนฺทิตฺวา โภชนมทาสึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vanditvā bhojanamadāsiṁ.
I honored her feet and offered her a meal,
อนฺนปาเนน✎ ร่าง
Annena ca pānena ca,
satiating her with food and drink,

ขชฺเชน จ ยญฺจ ตตฺถ สนฺนิหิตํ✎ ร่าง
Khajjena ca yañca tattha sannihitaṁ;
treats, or whatever was in the cupboard.
สนฺตปฺปยิตฺวาน ๒- อวจํ✎ ร่าง
Santappayitvā avacaṁ,
Then I said:
อยฺเย อิจฺฉามิ ปพฺพชิตุํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Ayye icchāmi pabbajituṁ’.
‘Ma’am, I wish to go forth!’
อถ มํ ภณติ ตาโต✎ ร่าง
Atha maṁ bhaṇatī tāto,
But my dad said to me:
อิเธว ปุตฺติเก ๓- จราหิ ตํ ๔- ธมฺมํ✎ ร่าง
‘Idheva puttaka carāhi tvaṁ dhammaṁ;
‘Child, practice Dhamma right here then!
อนฺเนน จ ปาเนน จ สนฺ✎ ร่าง
Annena ca pānena ca,
With food and drink
ตปฺปย ๕- สมเณ ทฺวิชาตี จ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tappaya samaṇe dvijātī ca’.
satisfy ascetics and the twice-born.’
อถาหํ ภณามิ ตาตํ✎ ร่าง
Athahaṁ bhaṇāmi tātaṁ,
Then I said to my dad,
โรทนฺตี อญฺชลึ ปณาเมตฺวา
อนุช✎ ร่าง
Rodantī añjaliṁ paṇāmetvā;
crying, my cupped palms raised to him:
านาหิ ๖- มํ ตาต มยา ปกตํ✎ ร่าง
‘Pāpañhi mayā pakataṁ,
‘I’ve done bad things in the past;
กมฺมํ ตํ นิชฺชเรสฺสามิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kammaṁ taṁ nijjaressāmi’.
I shall wear that bad deed away.’
อถ มํ ภณติ ตาโต✎ ร่าง
Atha maṁ bhaṇatī tāto,
And my dad said to me:

ปาปุณ โพธิญฺจ อคฺคธมฺมญฺจ✎ ร่าง
‘Pāpuṇa bodhiñca aggadhammañca;
‘May you attain awakening, the highest state,
นิพฺพานญฺจ ลภสฺสุ✎ ร่าง
Nibbānañca labhassu,
and may you find the extinguishment
ยํ สจฺฉิกริ ทฺวิปทเสฏฺโฐ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ sacchikarī dvipadaseṭṭho’.
that was realized by the best of men!’
มาตาปิตู อภิวาทยิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Mātāpitū abhivādayitvā,
I bowed down to my mother and father,
สพฺพญฺจ ญาติคณวคฺคํ✎ ร่าง
Sabbañca ñātigaṇavaggaṁ;
and my whole group of relatives;
สตฺตาหํ ปพฺพชิตา✎ ร่าง
Sattāhaṁ pabbajitā,
and then, seven days after going forth,
ติสฺโส วิชฺชา อผุสฺสยึ ๗- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tisso vijjā aphassayiṁ.
I realized the three knowledges.
ชานามิ อตฺตโน สตฺต✎ ร่าง
Jānāmi attano satta,
I know my last seven lives;
ชาติโย ยสฺสา ยํ ผลํ วิปาโก✎ ร่าง
Jātiyo yassayaṁ phalavipāko;
I shall relate to you the deeds
ตํ ตว อาจิกฺขิสฺสํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ tava ācikkhissaṁ,
of which this life is the fruit and result:
ตํ เอกมนา นิสาเมหิ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ ekamanā nisāmehi.
focus your whole mind on that.
นครมฺหิ เอรกกจฺเฉ✎ ร่าง
Nagaramhi erakacche,
In the city of Erakacca
สุวณฺณกาโร อหํ ปหูตธโน✎ ร่าง
Suvaṇṇakāro ahaṁ pahūtadhano;
I was a goldsmith with lots of money.
โยพฺพนมเทน มตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Yobbanamadena matto,
Drunk on the pride of youth,
โส ปรทารํ อเสวิหํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
So paradāraṁ asevihaṁ.
I had sex with someone else’s wife.
โสหํ ตโต จวิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Sohaṁ tato cavitvā,
Having passed away from there,
นิรยมฺหิ อปจฺจิสํ จิรํ✎ ร่าง
Nirayamhi apaccisaṁ ciraṁ;
I burned in hell for a long time.
ปกฺโก ตโต จ อุฏฺฐหิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Pakko tato ca uṭṭhahitvā,
Rising up from there
มกฺกฏิยา กุจฺฉิโมกฺกมึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Makkaṭiyā kucchimokkamiṁ.
I was conceived in a monkey’s womb.
สตฺตาหํ ชาตกมฺมํ✎ ร่าง
Sattāhajātakaṁ maṁ,
When I was only seven days old,

มหากปิ ยูถโป นิลฺลจฺเฉสิ✎ ร่าง
Mahākapi yūthapo nillacchesi;
I was castrated by the monkey chief.
ตสฺเสตํ กมฺมผลํ✎ ร่าง
Tassetaṁ kammaphalaṁ,
This was the fruit of that deed,
ยถาปิ คนฺตฺวาน ปรทารํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi gantvāna paradāraṁ.

I was conceived in the womb

of a lame, one-eyed she-goat.

I shouldered a cart,
อนฺโธวฏฺโฏ อกลฺโล✎ ร่าง
Andhovaṭṭo akallo,
blind, tail-less, feeble,

Taṁ maṁ tato satthavāho,
Because of the huge interest we owed,
อุสฺสนฺนาย วิปุลาย วฑฺฒิยา✎ ร่าง
Ussannāya vipulāya vaḍḍhiyā;
I was dragged away screaming,
โอกฑฺฒติ วิลปนฺตึ✎ ร่าง
Okaḍḍhati vilapantiṁ,
taken by force from the family home
อจฺฉินฺทิตฺวา กุลฆรสฺส ๓- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Acchinditvā kulagharasmā.
by a caravan leader.
อถ โสฬสเม วสฺเส✎ ร่าง
Atha soḷasame vasse,
When I was sixteen years old,
ทิสฺวาน ๔- มํ ปตฺตโยพฺพนํ กญฺญํ✎ ร่าง
Disvā maṁ pattayobbanaṁ kaññaṁ;
seeing I was a girl of marriageable age,
โอรุทฺธตสฺส ปุตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Orundhatassa putto,
his son confined me as his wife—
คิริทาโส นาม นาเมน ฯ✎ ร่าง
Giridāso nāma nāmena.
Giridāsa was his name.
ตสฺสปิ อญฺญา ภริยา✎ ร่าง
Tassapi aññā bhariyā,
He also had another wife,

Tassāhaṁ viddesanamakāsiṁ.
yet I stirred up resentment in her.

Tassetaṁ kammaphalaṁ,
As the fruit of that deed,
ยํ มํ อปกิริตูน คจฺฉนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ maṁ apakīritūna gacchanti;
they abandoned me and left,
ทาสีว อุปฏฺฐหนฺตึ✎ ร่าง
Dāsīva upaṭṭhahantiṁ,
though I served them like a slave.
ตสฺสปิ อนฺโต กโต มยาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tassapi anto kato mayā”ti.
Now I’ve made an end to this as well.”
